TSI2006:  FINAL PERFORMANCE ASSIGNMENT

OR

SPEAK THE SPEECH, I PRAY YOU

WHY THIS ASSIGNMENT?

Because it gives you a chance to pull together, try on, experiment with, and demonstrate some of the things you’ve learned at the Folger this summer

Because it gives you the chance to be in the same place your students will be in—in a group, figuring out a scene that’s new to you, and making great sense of it.

THE ASSIGNMENT ITSELF:

Rehearse, memorize, and perform a scene from Shakespeare with at least one other person.  This must be a scene that you have never directed or acted in — and preferably that is new to you. We will all perform for each other.

Performance date:  Friday, July 28th 10:00 am 12:00 pm.  Will this be work?  Yes.  Will this be fun? Yes.

NUTS AND BOLTS:

)        The words must be Shakespeare’s. Edit and cut, but all words must be his.

)        Your scene should be at least 5 minutes in length, and not more than 10 minutes long.

)        Your group may perform a complete scene, cuttings from one, or selections from several plays which are thematically linked, or other variations.

)        Your scene may be “tragedy, comedy, pastoral, pastoral-comical, historical-pastoral, tragical-historical, tragical-comical-historical-pastoralBit is up to you and your partner(s).

)        All parts must be memorized.

)        Everyone in the group must perform as actors and have lines to speak.

)        If you teach drama, you MAY NOT DIRECT!

)        Production values are up to you.  You may use costumes and/or props but it’s not required.  Since we have no access to theatrical props and costumes, plan to find whatever you want to use.

Caleen and Michael will be available to consult with you about your scenes, though they won’t direct you.  (Don’t even think about it!)  They’ll be glad to help you find the answers to your own questions.
