Teach Yourself the Internet in 24 Hours

- Appendix C -
Shareware Products for the Macintosh

This appendix lists every shareware program you need for optimal Internet use with your Macintosh.

E-mail Clients

For the Macintosh, Eudora is really the only full-blown shareware e-mail client available. For more discussion of what e-mail clients can do, refer to Part II, "E-Mail: The Great Communicator."

Eudora Light--The shareware version of Eudora Pro. This directory contains versions for both PowerPC and non-PowerPC Macs.

News Clients

I recommend Newswatcher as a stable, easy-to-use newsreader. The News is also a decent newsreader. For more details on what newsreaders can do, refer to Lessons 9, "Basic Journalism: Introduction to Newsgroups," and 10, "Getting the Scoop: Using Newsgroups."

Newswatcher--The premiere news reader for Macintosh.

The News--A news reader with a slightly different approach.

Web Browsers

Browser versions change almost constantly. These links enable you to download the most current version of your favorite browser with easy-to-follow directions.

Netscape Navigator--Still the most popular browser around.

Internet Explorer--Gives Netscape a run for its money.

NCSA Mosaic--The original Web browser.

FTP Clients

FTP clients can help you easily download files from the Internet and add more flexibility to FTP than Web browsers offer. There are two main FTP clients for Macintosh: Anarchie and Fetch. They are both very good. For more on what FTP can do for you, refer to Lesson 17, "Getting Files with FTP."

Anarchie--Lets you FTP files and search Archie databases with one application.

ftp://ftp.download.com/pub/mac/internet/anarc201.sit.hqx

Fetch--The first, and still very powerful, FTP client for the Macintosh.

ftp://mirror.apple.com/mirrors/Info-Mac.Archive/comm/inet/fetch-301.hqx

Gopher Clients

Web browsers do an excellent job with Gopher, but if you want a little extra, you might want to pick up TurboGopher. For more on Gopher, refer to Lesson 18, "Gopher Even More."

TurboGopher--THE Gopher client for Macintosh.

ftp://mirror.apple.com/mirrors/Info-Mac.Archive/comm/inet/turbo-gopher-203.hqx

Telnet Clients

These clients help you access online libraries and other resources that aren't available through the Web or Gopher. A few Telnet clients are available for the Macintosh, although NCSA's Telnet is by far the best. I've included a couple of the best shareware Telnet clients here. For more information on Telnet, look at Lesson 19, "Telnet to the Internet."

NCSA Telnet--The best.

TN3270--This client gives you access to those sites that require TN3270 emulation. They're rare, but this is a handy one to have around.

File Compression Utility

A lot of those files out there in cyberspace come compressed in order to save space. In order to use them, you have to be able to uncompress them. For this job, there's really only one utility to get:

StuffIt Expander--The best compression utility for Macintosh. Also available in a commercial version. There is, however, a chicken-and-egg problem in that you need a decompression program to decompress a compressed program, but StuffIt Expander usually comes compressed. (For Netscape 3 users, this is no problem, as StuffIt Expander comes included with Netscape 3.) To solve this problem, you should go to Aladdin's StuffIt Expander Web page for help:

Other Compression Utilities--If you are interested in handling files compressed with non-Macintosh compression, you might check out some of the utilities in the following directory:

Plug-Ins

To enjoy some of the "snappier" features of the Web, you might want to grab a few of these. Refer to Lessons 11, "Chatting Live on the Internet," and 12, "Internet Phone and Video," for more information on these exciting products.
