Key Largo to Flamingo boating speed record set!
Two new world records for boating were set on September 28, 2000 for the Key Largo, FL to Flamingo Waterway by
Team Key Largo of The Florida Keys
The Key Largo to Flamingo Waterway runs through the shallow waters of Florida Bay, through Crocodile Dragover, Madiera Bay, and the Dump Keys. The course was run through the center of this wilderness waterway.
Parts of this course traveled through some of the most remote areas of the Everglades National Park Florida Bay Area.
The straight line distance from Red 54 Key Largo ICW to Flamingo Marker Green 9 is 30.2 statute miles one way. The Team Key Largo course was comprised of 12 legs that totaled 31.4 statute miles.
The 30.2 miles (by line of sight) was run at 28 minutes and 38 seconds, giving Team Key Largo an average speed of 63.284 miles per hour, a new WORLD RECORD for the official Key Largo Flamingo run!
The round trip course consisting of 60.4 miles was completed in 58 minutes and 1 second for an average speed of 62.71 MPH, a new WORLD RECORD!
Top speeds of over 70 MPH were reached through these treacherous shallow waters!
The boat provided by Rowell's Marina in Key Largo, Florida is a Glasstream 27ft SCX powered by Twin 250 HP Mercury Motors and capable of speeds in excess of 70 MPH!
Charles Rowell was the chief mechanic for the team.
