Severus picked up a glass and balanced it between his trembling fingers. There was still some liquid left in it, languishing at the bottom like there was nowhere better to be.

Maybe there wasn’t.

They were working towards an eventual end, working day and night to find the inevitable weakness. Severus went to the meetings with James and Lily, formulated plans with them while drowning in self loathing. They had worked fast.

They hadn’t worked fast enough.

He emptied the glass and slammed it on the table, letting quavering vibrations run through his arm. He was reminded of the drinking parties that were held in the Hogwarts towers, where wild eyed teenagers with raging hormones, drank the dark world away.

The edge of the glass was tinged with green. The edge of the glass, the decoration on the table, the wine itself, all of it green. Green was a Snape family trait, a tradition and a weakness. His father and grandfather had embraced it in their devotion to Slytherin. Severus had embraced it in Lily Evans’ eyes.

Malfoy sent the first owl. It swung between despair and joy in seconds.

The master had been defeated.

The Potters had died screaming.

They would have to formulate plans to survive the coming pogroms.

Lily Potter screaming. She was never the target, it was James and the infant who caught the Dark Lord’s eye. They were the ones who were supposed to die. Lily was just a muggle born, too insignificant for Voldemort. She wasn’t supposed to be screaming as her body fell to the ground.

He wondered how much more green wine it would take before she stopped screaming.
