“Buffy . . .”

She shrugs at me. Walks away from me and shrugs. “I’m sorry. I have an unavoidable engagement. Chosen One, remember?”

Of course I remember. How can I forget, the way she shoves it down my throat with a well timed kick. “I could wait for you?”

“Oh Riley.” I thought she might walk back to me, steal a kiss. “That’s sweet, but I wouldn’t want you to wait up for me.”

I used to fight in the night. I used to be stronger, used to be able to handle a really important job. I don’t actually have a job at the moment. “You’ll call me?”

“Sure.” She twirls her stake around her fingers. “Maybe tomorrow.”

We used to be inseparable. She didn’t need to call me because we were together all the time. Eating, sleeping, learning, training, killing. Now we only get to see each other when it’s convenient for her. I’ve become a victim to convenience.

“Okay.” My voice is bright. “Have a good time, you know, with the patrolling.”

“I always do.” I watch her walk away.

“Love you.”
