4. Both room arrangements and instructional materials may need to be altered for children with special needs. Consider the need and then determine appropriate changes (e.g. space for wheelchair access in learning areas).


5. Computers

A) Adults must be comfortable with the computer before they can help children be comfortable.
B) Computers should not be used for teacher-directed activities or as a reward for children's good behavior
C) Computer use should be a social, child-directed activity.
D) Selecting software:
i. Software should be open-ended and encourage exploration, and match the specific goals of the teacher who selects it. ii. NAEYC's guidelines include technical, learning, and content criteria.

6. The Outdoor Environment
A) Outdoor areas should be accessible, in good repair, and provide opportunities for diverse gross motor activities that are matched to the developmental level of the children using the space.
B) As with indoor areas, the outdoor environment should be organized into different activity areas.
C) Ideally, outdoor areas should provide some flexibility for change.

7. Safety

A) The physical environment should be free from any hazards.
B) Emergency procedures should be practiced regularly.
C) First aid and fire materials should be easily accessible.
D) Emergency information should be up-to-date.
E) Playground areas should be fenced.
F) Special safety issues may apply for children with special needs.

8. Student diversity can be incorporated by involving parents in the classroom, by creating activities based on home routines and family culture and by basing curricula on ethnic activities, holidays, foods or dress.
