7. Toy Story

PURPOSE  The purpose of this activity is to analyze how toys facilitate infant perception and cognitive development.

ACTIVITY STATEMENT:
Visit a local toy store and observe toys for the infant. Select three toys to analyze and then answer the questions in the instructions  about each toy.  (Two elements)

Instructions: Visit a local toy store and select three toys designed for infants. Answer the following questions about each toy.

TOY 1—Description:
A. What types of sensory and motor experiences would this toy stimulate?
B. What sensory or motor feedback does the toy provide?
C. Does the toy seem appropriate for the age range labeled on the box by the manufacturer? Why or why not?

TOY 2—Description:
A. What types of sensory and motor experiences would this toy stimulate?

C. Does the toy seem appropriate for the age range labeled on the box by the manufacturer? Why or why not?

8. Interviewing Parents on Baby's First Words

PURPOSE   The objective of this exercise is to examine the first words of infants and look for universal patterns.

ASSIGNMENT STATEMENT: (1)   Interview 5 to 10 parents about their children's first words.  Give identifying data about each set of parents.  (2) Place the words in groups such as nouns and verbs, food and toys, and other categories. Collate the results.  (3)   Discuss whether there appear to be any similarities or trends in children's first words andthe reasons for these similarities or differences.  (Three elements)
