Emergency Procedures for Preschoolers PURPOSE The objective of this activity is to identify safety measures for young children by interviewing local professionals and parents of preschoolers. ASSIGNMENT STATEMENT: Using information in the instructions below, conduct two interviews. The first should be an interview of a professional who has received training in first aid (e.g., nurse, paramedic, Red Cross worker, physician, firefighter). Interview this person on the proper procedures for the emergencies named in the instructions. The second interview should be with a parent of a preschooler. Ask the parent the same questions. Compare the answers to the two sets of questions. Did the parents know the correct procedures, according to the professional trained in first aid? Emergency Procedures for Preschoolers Instructions: (1) You are to interview two people. Include descriptive information. The first person should be someone who has been trained in first aid (e.g., a nurse, paramedic, Red Cross worker, physician, firefighter, or teacher). Interview this person on the proper procedures for the emergencies listed below. (2) The second person should be the parent of a preschooler. Ask the parent the same questions. (3) Discuss the two individuals' responses and compare them. (Three elements) What should you do in each of the following situations 1. Ingestion of toxic substances (e.g., poison, household cleaners) 2. Suspected fracture 3. Choking on a small object or a piece of food 4. Profuse bleeding from a cut 5. Burns 6. Severe bruises 7. High fever 8. Severe sunburn 9. Seizure Ask the following to the parent only. In addition to the questions above: 1. Are you certified in first aid and infant CPR? 2. Do you have emergency phone numbers posted by your phone? 3. Do you consistently put your child into a child safety seat when traveling in the car? 4. Does your family have a fire escape plan? If so, does your preschooler know it? 16. Priorities in Early Childhood Education PURPOSE The objective of this activity is to to identy priorities in early childhood education. ACTIVITY STATEMENT: (1) Interview parents of preschoolers and educators of preschoolers, using the questions in the instructions.. Tally the results of the interviews and take notes on the major comments of individuals from each group. (2) What are the differences between the priorities of the parents and the priorities of the educators? (3) Why do such differences exist? (4) Should anything be done about the differences? (Four elements) Priorities in Early Childhood Education Instructions: Interview five parents and five educators of preschoolers (e.g., day care teachers) to discern what factors they value most in a good program for preschool children. Ask them their opinions about the following: Location Cost Opportunities for play Academic preparation for elementary school Physical safety Other (invite them to specify) |
