CHAPTER 14 Physical Development in Adolescence When students have mastered the material in Chapter 14, they should be able to: 1. Describe the concept of adolescence, how it has changed, and the factors that have influenced those changes. 2. Discuss the two major theoretical views of the adolescent period. 3. Discuss the adolescent growth spurt. Identify the characteristic height and weight changes during adolescence. 4. Define what is meant by a secular trend and identify the various secular trends in adolescence and their probable causes. 5. Define and identify the primary sex characteristics and indicate how they change during adolescence. 6. Define and identify the secondary sex characteristics and indicate how they change during adolescence. 7. Discuss the role of hormones in puberty. Identify and discuss the functions of the major sex hormones. 8. Describe the effects of early versus late maturing in males and females, including information concerning long-term effects. 9. Describe the relationship between body image and self-esteem during adolescence. 10. Characterize the health of the adolescent. Identify the major causes of death in adolescents. 11. Describe the major health problems during adolescence, including sexually transmitted diseases. 12. Discuss drugs and alcohol, and other problems in adolescence. 13. Identify the adolescent eating disorders, including symptoms and treatment. 14. Discuss the factors that make women who participate in certain sports more susceptible to eating disorders. Describe the two strategies that are used to prevent and treat eating disorders among young female athletes. CHAPTER 15 Cognitive Development in Adolescence When students have mastered the material in Chapter 15, they should be able to: 1. Describe Jean Piaget’s view of adolescent thinking and be able to compare and contrast formal and concrete operational thought. 2. Describe the characteristics of reasoning beyond the formal operational level, in particular reasoning for everyday or real-life problems. 3. Describe the implications of Piaget’s view of adolescent thinking. 4. Describe morality and Kohlberg’s six stages of moral judgment. 5. Discuss the criticism of Kohlberg’s theory with respect to the impact of prior knowledge and the distinction between morality and convention. 6. Discuss Gilligan’s alternative to Kohlberg and emphasis on the ethics of care. 7. Describe the development of social cognition during adolescence. 8. Describe adolescent egocentrism, including the notions of "imaginary audience" and "personal fable" in adolescence. 9. Describe how an adolescent views the political process and how a political ideology develops. 10. Discuss the development of the concept of God and religion in childhood and adolescence. 11. Discuss the information-processing view of adolescent thinking, and indicate how this approach characterizes developmental change. 12. Discuss the characteristics of an expert and how an individual develops expertise in a particular area. 13. Define what is meant by critical thinking and discuss ways in which adolescents can develop these skills. 14. Compare the structure of junior high schools with that of middle schools and discuss the advantages of the latter in easing a child’s transition from elementary school. 15. Discuss why the statistics on dropout rates are difficult to interpret. Discuss the research findings regarding the factors that contribute to resilience in youth. CHAPTER 16 Psychosocial Development in Adolescence When students have mastered the material in Chapter 16, they should be able to: 1. Discuss the process of identity development from the standpoint of individuation. Describe the four major phases of this process. 2. Describe how Erik Erikson views the process of identity development in adolescence. 3. Identify and describe James Marcia’s four identity statuses. Compare his approach with Erikson’s approach. Discuss how differences in social class, culture, and ethnicity affect identity development. 4. Discuss the nature of adolescents’ social relationships, especially those with their parents. 5. Identify and describe the various parenting styles and indicate their effect on adolescent development. 6. Discuss the impact of divorce, remarriage, and stepfamilies during the adolescent period. 7. Describe the nature of adolescent friendships. Indicate the developmental changes in friendships and describe sex differences in peer relations. 8. Describe the development of the peer group throughout the adolescent period. Indicate the relevant variables that determine peer group participation. 9. Discuss the variables that contribute to popularity in adolescence. 10. Discuss how taking on household chores affects an adolescent’s psychosocial development. 11. Discuss the nature of sexuality during adolescence in terms of attitude and behavior. 12. Describe the impact of dating on adolescent sexuality, including date rape and nonheterosexual orientation. 13. Describe the problem of teenage pregnancy and the likely psychosocial outcomes. 14. Describe the characteristics of teenage depression and suicide. 15. Describe the characteristics of juvenile delinquency and gang involvement during adolescence. 16.
