Why

While many business support mechanisms addressing various problems of the technology business development, technology transfer, and venture capital raising are offered online, this business coach attempts to create an unbroken chain of business services guiding the entrepreneur through all these sophisticated processes.

Imagine a mountain river. You have to cross it by jumping from one slippery rock to another. And these rocks are quite at a distance one from another. What's attempted here is to arrange these rocks in an unbroken chain, add missing links wherever it's required, to make the river crossing easier and faster.

An online guide cannot provide solutions to all business problems. It can prompt the entrepreneur to ask key questions about competitiveness of his/her business, provide access to critical resources, and guide through the business development process. Tailoring of these general solutions to the needs of a specific enterprise is to be done by the entrepreneur or an external advisor.

How

Creating an integrated services technology business development service online requires a lot of expertise in various areas. While several institutions have created and mastered such packaged service offline some years ago, attempts to develop such an innovative service on the net did not produce the desired results, mainly due to the communication gap between technology transfer experts and their IT sub-contractors. Technology transfer experts are not aware of all the opportunities that modern information technology provides for building a unique comprehensive online business coach, while the IT subcontractor lacks a deep understanding of the innovative service being developed and thus, cannot suggest matching creative technical solutions.

To bridge the communication gap, either the IT-subcontractor should acquire extensive practical experience in technology business development, which would take several years, or the technology business developers should obtain a deeper knowledge of Web design and Web-based business service development. The second solution proved to be more effective in our specific case. With an old-fashioned IT background (my first MSc was in IT, but I switched to economics and business development afterwards) and having learned the ABC of  Web design (indeed, just the first three letters of the Web design alphabet), I  attempted to build a prototype of the online business coach for small technology-led companies. The work is still in progress. One the prototype is developed, we will hand it over to professional Web designers for building a full-scale online business coach. We are planning to operationalise this in the last quarter of 2001.

Meanwhile, even the prototype can be used as it could provide valuable support for technology business development. Your feedback on the site would be highly appreciated. "Feedback is the breakfast of champions" and it would enable us to develop the best services for you.
