Delusions of Grandma, Surrender the Pink - both by Carrie Fisher. Where You Are by George Constable. (See the entertainment page for info on these ones.) |

The Last Shot by Darcy Frey - Basically, this book is about basketball in the ghettos of NYC as a last chance for many young men there. Talking about it doesn't do it justice. BTW: Stephon Marbury is one of the characters. (It's in fiction, but it's real, more or less.)

This was a favorite movie for a long time (despite the fact that Alec Baldwin is in it), but when I finally read the book, I was hooked on Tom Clancy for good. He gets so detailed and yet stays so real. Definitely read it. If you're looking for other Tom Clancy, I've also got Cardinal of the Kremlin, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, Executive Orders, and a few SSN ones (maybe more - come check!)
Okay - don't laugh. This really is a good book. It may not apply to every single person, but if you can't quite seem to figure out why all your hard work in a relationship isn't paying off, you might

Great movie, better book. There are a lot of details in the book they couldn't have possibly fit into the movie and that you'll be sorely missing if you don't read it. The nice thing is that the movie was so well made that you won't dislike it even after you finish this book. Oh - and if you're anything like me, read it when there's nothing else going on. You won't be able to put it down.

want to check out this book before blaming someone else. Maybe you're just not giving them what they need. He gets a little religious from time to time, but no scripture quoting that I can remember, just good ideas.
This one can get a little weird, and she tends to attribute too much to sex (sort of the female 'Freud'), but it's a good book for any woman to read, especially if your relationship with your mother is at either extreme of the spectrum. Men should read it too, but may not always understand when things don't quite apply. It's a good thing to read before you have daughters of your own, though.

Erma is hysterical! If you grew up in a dysfunctional family, here is a great chance to laugh at it. If you are going out of your mind with the family you have now, read it. Basically, unless you're a hermit or enjoy taking yourself too seriously, read this! I've also got "I want to grow up, I want to grow hair, I want to go to Boise", which is an

The Fifth Child by Doris Lessing - This is an extremely odd book. Without ruining it, I'll let you know that it starts out very hopeful and utopian, then changes drastically. It presents few to no solutions to the problem at hand, but definitely makes you think, especially if you can put yourself in the shoes of the parents. A good book for people who feel they are very accepting, open-minded, and non-violent to read to test themselves. It's short, so the disturbance isn't extremely long. I wish I could give a copy to everyone I knew, but I'm not sure everyone else would 'enjoy' it (though I'm not sure that's the word) as much as I have.

happens to be my favorite. Mr. Darcy is perfection of man, and Elizabeth Bennett is the kind of woman we could use more of in today's society. There have been so many reviews, etc., of all of her books, that there's no point in doing one here, but just know that they really ARE that good. (I also have Sense and Sensibility, which is also exceptionally good.) |
