Q: What is this all about?
A: The Tecmo Onslaught League wasn't always the Tecmo Onslaught League. In fact, it didn't have a name at all for years. It all began for several reasons, the most important being Gene and Frank's genuine love for Tecmo Super Bowl. Having yourself and a friend each pick a team to take through a Tecmo season is fun, but it leads to endless games against the computer. Sick and tired of playing meaningless preseason head-to-head games, Gene and Frank decided to take things to the next level and each choose six teams each to take through a season of Tecmo. With Gene and Frank each owning a team in each division, they were ensured plenty of head-to-head games. Furthermore, if everything went well for both competitors, the playoffs would exclusively be a Gene vs. Frank showdown! The insanity didn't stop there. There was to be more at stake than simple Tecmo bragging rights. Oh yes, dear fans... there was CASH ON THE LINE! Gene and Frank assigned each statistical category a monetary value and the winner of that statistical category at the end of the season would be paid that amount of money from the other player. After its initial draft, Gene is credited for so cleverly naming the list of monetary values as "Da Bets Bitch". Special cash sums were awarded for things like winning the Super Bowl, winning a head-to-head matchup, and doing amazing things in Tecmo. The most prized award was known as the "Five Dollar Bonus" which could be attained by either returning a punt or an interception for a touchdown (nearly impossible things to do in the SNES version of Tecmo Super Bowl). Penalties were also a factor. The now infamous "Two Dollar Fine" is slapped on whoever loses to the computer under any circumstances. |

Q: What are the rules in the Tecmo Onslaught League?
A: The rules in the Tecmo Onslaught League have always been numerous, but due to Gene and Frank's ridiculous attention to detail and incredible forsight, most rules were drawn up before any season ever began. Some of the more important rules are as follows: -- Using the nosetackle on defense to dive forward at the quarterback is allowed. While "Lurching" has been banned from many leagues, it's technique is not a failsafe method of defense and therefore has been deemed allowable. Gene and Frank can do it to each other, too... but plans for the future may outlaw its use in head-to-head games. -- When a player has to pit two of his teams against one another, that player must choose the team they wish to control and let the CPU control the other team. He may not tamper with the playbook of the forsaken team prior to the game. -- No tampering of the CPU team playbooks is allowed. -- As of now, there are no rules that force a player to have a certain number of attempts when they win a "yards per attempt" record. A player could conceivably have 1 attempt for 99 yards and still be a statistical leader. Tecmo's rules in this regard to quarterback stats is still honored (Tecmo won't show a quarterback's stats until he has a respectable number of attempts). -- Super Bowl Repeat and 3-peat Prevention Rule: If both Super Bowl are owned by the same person during a Super Bowl repeat or 3-peat attempt, the owner of the returning championship team must choose that team and go head-to-head against the other player. Only during a team's first Super Bowl appearance may the owner face the CPU if both teams are owned by him. -- Each season, Gene and Frank must pick teams that they have not been in previous seasons. Only the Super Bowl champion gets to pick his championship team again to go for the repeat. Once all the teams have been chosen, the process starts over again. For divisions with only 4 teams, a random process will be used to determine who gets which team for a 2nd time in the fifth season of the cycle. In the fifth season if a team exists in one of the 5 team divisions that a player has not yet been (due to Super Bowl repeat attempts, etc), then that team will be assigned to the player instead of that player being assigned a team from a four team division for a 2nd time. Starting in season 6, all 6 teams for each player will be randomly drawn out of a hat - teams will be assigned regardless of conference or division. Following seasons will be conducted in the same way, but repeat teams will again not be allowed until the end of the cycle. |

Q: Who are Gene and Frank?
A: Just a pair of psychopaths who would dominate you in the Super Nintendo version of Tecmo Super Bowl. See the "Gene vs. Frank" section of this website for more.
Q: Which version of Tecmo Bowl is played?
A: See above, moron. The Tecmo Onslaught League is played exclusively on the original Super Nintendo version of Tecmo Super Bowl. The original Tecmo Bowl for Nintendo didn't have stats, and the Tecmo Super Bowl version for Nintendo had questionable graphics and an unreliable memory card. While it could be argued that the Nintendo version of Tecmo Super Bowl was a better game with better players, the risk of a lost season leading to a Gene and Frank mass murder rampage is too great. I think the whole world is safer if we just stick to the SNES version. The later SNES versions of Tecmo Super Bowl aren't even worth mentioning. Most fans don't even consider the Playstation version a Tecmo product.
Q: I think I'm better than Gene and Frank at Tecmo Super Bowl. How can I prove it?
A: Email your statistical achievements to tecmo_onslaught@yahoo.com. Include a picture, screenshot, or movie that proves your statistical achievement. Your record will go up in a special section on the Tecmo Onslaught site. Remember that Gene and Frank play as many as 5 or 6 games against EACH OTHER for any given team they control. That being said, it will still be next to impossible to beat any of the records you see on this site - even if you are playing 16 cheesy games against the computer. Bring it on, you little sissies! |
