Strawberry
Fields
After achieving its aim to be on the Guinness World Record
for its feat of having baked the world's largest strawberry
cake, La Trinidad prides itself to be dubbed as the
"Strawberry Capital" of the Philippines". Needless to say,
Trinidad Valley has strawberry fields that offer
mouth-watering red strawberries to visitors.
A few kilometers east off the valley, colorful gardens of
roses abound. Actually, most of the flowers used during the
annual celebration of Panagbenga in Baguio City come from La
Trinidad. It is no wonder why the place has been called
"Rose bowl of the Philippines".
Trinidad also is home to a variety of vegetables (though not
necessarily grown in the valley). These vegetables come from
the highlands of Benguet. From cabbages to beans, carrots,
peas, potatoes, pepper, cucumber, legumes--they're all here.
Truly, Benguet is the country's prime producer of
vegetables.
Trinidad is my home and I spent most of my life and probably
my whole life in this place. It's no heaven nor paradise,
but I just love the place. I remember during my childhood
days, we used to climb up "Mt. Kalugong" just to view the
scenic valley of Trinidad. Or we would hike down Bahong
(where roses abound) to take a bath in its stream or to
catch mudfish. Ahh... those yesteryears of my growing up
days!
La Trinidad is the
seat of the Provincial Capitol of Benguet and the capitol is in itself a wonder
to behold. A great work of art indeed.
It is also the home
of the lone State University of the province, the
Benguet State University, which is a center
of excellence in Agriculture Education.
