THE PARABLES

Jesus told some really, cool stories to make a point. These are a few of my favorites.

The Pharisee and the Publican
Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other a publican. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer, O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity, greedy, dishonest, adulterous, or even like this publican. I fast twice a week, and pay tithes on my whole income. The publican stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed. O God, be merciful to me a sinner. Jesus said, I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone that exalts himself will be made humble, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.
(Luke 18:9-14)

The Good Samaritan
A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell in with robbers, who after both stripping and beating him went their way, leaving him half-dead. Has it happened a certain priest was going the same way, and when he saw him, passed by; and likewise a Levite, when he was near the place saw him, and passed by. But a certain Samaritan as he journeyed came upon him, and seeing him, was moved with compassion. He went up to him and bound his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Setting him on his own beast brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day took two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, Take care of him: and whatever more thou spend, I, on my way back, will pay. Which of these three in thy opinion, proved himself neighbor on him that fell among robbers.
“He said he who took pity on him.” “Go and do thy also in like manner.”(Luke 10:29-36)

The Stubborn Child
To what then shall I liken this generation? What are they like? They are like children sitting in the market place, calling to one another, and saying, we have piped to you, and you did not dance. We have sung dirges, and you have not wept. For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say he has a devil. The son of man came eating and drinking, and you say behold a man who is a glutton, and drunkard and a friend of publicans and sinners! And wisdom is justified by her children.
(Luke7:31-35)
