Cutting Pipe To Make Wind Chimes | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
by Jim Haworth | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Calculate the length of your chime and use a magic marker to show this on the pipe.Pipe can be cut with a hacksaw or a pipe cutter. A cutter has a sharp wheel which scores the pipe (Picture 1), cutting deeper and deeper until it is all the way through. Place the cutting tool over the pipe with the wheel over the mark you have already made . Turn the knob at the end of the tool, until the wheel comes lightly into contact with the pipe. Turn the whole cutter around the pipe, leaving a score line (Picture 2 ) . Tighten the wheel a little and revolve the cutter again. Each time you do this the cut deepens until the pipe is cut off. A drop of oil in the groove after the first scoring cut will lengthen the life of the cutting wheel. The resulting cut will have a sharp burr on its end all around the inside. Use the triangular black piece of steel mounted on the back of the cutter to remove the burr (Picture 3). Just hold the pipe in one hand, insert the triangular piece into the end of the pipe and twist the pipe until the burr is removed (Picture 4) . If the pipe is too large for the deburring tool, carefully use a round or a half round or rat tail metal file to remove the burr by lightly running the file into the pipe on the end where the burr is located (Picture 5 and 6) . Rolled up sandpaper can be used like a file . Remember that a burr can be very sharp and carelessly running a finger along it may result in a nasty cut. |
