"The Miracle Worker" is Slated Thursday, Friday, and Saturday

"The Miracle Worker," the true story of Helen Keller and once a great Broadway success and, later a motion picture, comes to Fort Scott.  It is to be staged here at the High School auditorium by the junior class, under the direction of R.E. Eschliman, drama and speech instructor.
Linda Harper has the role of Helen Keller, Ginny Anneberg as her mother, Brian Simmons as her father, and Tim Henry as her brother.
Edwina Cowen has the major role of Annie Sullivan.
Others in the cast are Ron Endicott, doctor; LaDonna Young, Martha; Ron Pfeiffer, Percy and Dr. Anagnos; Beverly Bailey, Aunt Ev; Julie Vanderbeek, Viney; and Sandra Newcomb, Janet Comstock, Janice Thornton, Sharon Watkins, Cheryl Seaver, and Sonja Holsti, the blind girls.
With Eschliman on the production staff is Betty Lyons, assistant to the director. Sharon Richards is house manager.

Bill Sailors sets a new high mark in High School pole vaulting here by easing over at 10 feet 6 inches in the track meet against Pittsburg yesterday.

Grissom, Young Named to Pilot Two-Man Gemini
Maj. Virgil Grissom and Lt. Cmdr. John Young were selected today as the astronauts who will pilot the nation's first two-man space flight-a three-orbit Gemini mission late this year.

FFA Students Win Top Safety Award in Kansas
The Fort Scott Chapter of Future Farmers of America is winner of the state Future Farmers safety award. The award will be presented at the state FFA convention in Manhattan next week. Chapter members here have devoted many hours to safety work as seen in the photo showing Donald Pfeiffer, Roy Seavers and Ronald Murray recharging a fire extinguisher that was used to extinguish flames after a farm home was struck by lightning.

State Contest...
Robert Farmer was the only student from FSHS to attend the state speech contest. Robert took part in extemporaneous speaking and received a 2 rating. He also took part in oratory and received a 3 rating.
Fort Scott Musicians to Pittsburg Event
Fort Scott musicians will compete with an estimated 3,500 in the district musical festival at Pittsburg State College tomorrow. Carl Clinesmith and Byrne Wood will conduct the musical groups from Fort Scott. Competing are: High School orchestra, Senior High band, Kathie McNear, voice; Roger Sprecher, trumpet; Gladys Carruthers, saxophone; and Kaye Clinesmith, viola.

Fort Scott Wins Hurdles; Takes 4th Place at Ottawa...Fort Scott's fire balling track team rambled past 17 teams in the Ottawa Relays yesterday and settled for fourth place after leading the 21 teams in the meet until the final three events. Wally Young and Bernard Jefferson were the big point makers for the Bengal thinclads. Each scored nine points by taking first and second in the high and low hurdles. Other juniors participating were; Steve Armstrong, Bill Sailors, Johnny McFall, and Joe Allison.

A West German news agency apologized today for circulating an erroneous report that Soviet Premier Khrushchev had died.

Poitier, Neal  Win Oscars - Hollywood (AP)
Sidney Poitier, brillant Negro actor who had trouble getting started because of his calypso-type British West Indies accent, has become the first of his race to win a top movie Oscar for his ingratiating portrayal of an itinerant Baptist construction worker who helped nuns build a church in "Lillies of the Field."
Patricia Neal whose career has included downs as well as ups, made it a comeback story by taking best actress honors. Her winning role was as the slovenly housekeeper in "Hud."
"Tom Jones," a racy, rollicking tale of 18th century England was selected best picture at the 36th annual festivities at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

New Tennis Team...The Fort Scott High School tennis team has gotten off to a slow start this year, but the boys on the team are trying their hardest to make the first high school tennis team successful. Although they have only won one set, the boys are giving their competition a tough game. Boys competing are John McFall, Leigh Hudson, Steve Armstrong and Gary Rhodes. They all are active in both singles and doubles.

Beginning Drama...This year's beginning drama class will present the one-act play, "Gammer Gurton's Needle." This play was written in the 1500's and is a story about a woman who has lost her needle. During that era, a needle was one of the most valuable items anyone could own. The members of the play cast are:  Gammer, Judy Singmaster; Dame Chatte, Joyce Sinn; Hodge, Mike Shepard; Diccon, Brian Simmons; Cocke, Don Wakefield, Baeyle, Keith Johnson; Tyb, Vonna Brewer; Diccon, Edwina Cowen.
