Teen Talk...I asked a few seniors to recall their most memorable events at F.S.H.S. and here are their replies: Betty Lyons - The last football game of the year. Kenny Austin - The night we held the Chanute Comets on the 2-yard line for four downs to win the championship. Joyce Sinn - Homecoming '64, Robert Farmer - The night I locked Mr. Eshelbrenner in the dressing room during a basketball game. Sally Pollock - Jerry McCall. Robert Eshelbrenner - The day we locked Linda Jones in the fourth floor attic. Sandra Howell - "Fridays" because Saturday we don't have to go to school. David Kennedy - going to sleep on the floor in Mr. Coates' Junior English class. Roberta Lord - Last year's Junior-Senior Reception. Steve Armstrong - The day Mr. Crane got the mumps. Reitha Nelson - Mr. Kivett and chemistry. Woody Turner - Grade cards. Tim Henry - Beating Indy last year and stopping their 49-game winning streak. Dudley Quick - Joyce Sinn. Phyllis Johnson - The last day of school. Marsha Young - The fun I had with my friends in the afternoon. Moreen Fanning - Fire drills during the winter. Linda Jones - The day Bob Farmer had a demostration with his red wagon and toy soldiers to win an election. Block Berlin Routes Again, Buzz Airport...Berlin. The East German Communists closed the Berlin autobahn for 4 1/2 hours today and a Soviet jet buzzed West Berlin's big Tempelhof Airpport for the first time. State Farmers Degrees to Four...Dennis Smith, Steve Crandall, Dudley Quick and Tommy Collins, members of the local chapter of Future Farmers of America, will be awarded State Farmer FFA Degrees at 7:30 p.m., April 26, in the Municipal Auditorium at Manhattan during the State FFA Convention. Duane Neil of the local chapter has been notified by J.D. Lynd of the Kansas Co0Operative Council that he is tied with a score of 96 with a Caney student for individual high quiz score in the district state co-operative test. Dwayne Neil Wins Co-Op Quiz Event. Dwayne Veil has been declared winner of the district co-op quiz contest, by the Kansas Co-Operative Council. A member of the Fort Scott FFA Chapter, Neil now is eligible to attend the American Institute of Cooperation at the University of Missouri, Columbia, Aug. 8-11. Bulletin...Johnson City, Tex. President Johnson said today the United States is ready for peace talks in Viet Nam "next week, tomorrow or tonight." If anyone doubts it, he said, "come to the meeting room - we will be there." In a special Easter statement he said the United States "will finally settle for no less" than assured Independence for South Viet Nam. "Until that independence is guaranteed," he said, "there is no human power capable of forcing us to leave South Viet Nam." |
Look Out, It's Sidewalk Surfing Time...All you need is a reasonably flat board about a foot long. To this you attach roller skates, two wheels to the front, two wheels to the back...and then you wait for a sunny, warm day. And you pick a hill, such as the one shown here in Gunn Park, step off on the board and head down hill, and you're doing the latest thing to hit Fort Scott: sidewalk surfing. Greg Akers, 17, a Fort Scott High School student, demonstrates a little advanced surfing. Top Rating at Music Festival at Pittsburg. The Fort Scott Youth Symphony, High School Mixed Chorus and Junior High Orchestra received top rating at the District Music Festival held at Pittsburg Friday and Saturday. Ensembles rated I included the High School String Quartet of Bonnie Floyd, violin; Kathy McNear, violin; Kaye Clinesmith, viola, and David Freeman, cello; and Boys Quartet (vocal) of Gary Wolf, Roger Sprecher, Dale Carter and Lonnie Banwart. Solos rated 1 included High School students Roger Sprecher, low voice; Kathy McNear, high voice, Bonnie Floyd, violin; Kaye Clinesmith, viola; Roger Sprecher, trumpet. Youth to Direct Baptist Service. Youth of the First Baptist Church will be in charge of 10:30 a.m. worship services Sunday as a kick-off for Youth Week. Linda Jones will be mistress of ceremonies. To Enter State FFA Contests at K-State. Six students from Fort Scott High School will participate in the 42nd annual state vocational agriculture judging and farm mechanics contest April 26 and 27 at Kansas State University Manhattan. Dqayne Neil, Dennis Smith, and Steve Crandall of Fort Scott are entered in the dairy science and animal husbandry contests. Tommy Collins and Tommy Toepfer will compete in the farm shop tools, farm carpentry and concrete, farm power and machinery, rural electrification and fram welding contests. Dudley Quick and Rudy Simpson will be Fort Scott's delegates to the 37th annual convention of the Kansas Association of FFA. War Warning from Red Chinese...Red China called today for "full preparations" to send Chinese troops into the Vietnamese war if the United States escalates the fighting and the Vietnamese people call for help. "In accordance with the demands of the Vietnamese people and the requirements of the common struggle against U.S. imperialist aggression, the Chinese people have done and will continue to do their utmost to assist the Vietnamese people to defeat the U.S. aggressors conpletely," the resolution said. White House Mobs Protest Viet Policy... Thousands of pickets mostly students, paraded in front of the White House today carrying signs calling for an end to the war in Viet Nam. Many of the youthful pickets showed signs of a sleepless night. Some carried packs on their backs. Many were bearded and long hair was the rule. There were also a lot of well-dressed adults and some young children in the crowd, however. |
