ST. JOHN'S WORT Starring - Megumi Okina - Saito Yoichiro - Koji Okura. Directed by - Ten Shimoyama? Nami was orphaned at a very early age after her mother died and her father could not cope on his own. After her absent father dies Nami inherits the mansion in which she was born.. Kohei her ex-boyfriend is basing a new computer game on Nami and goes with her to the mansion to gather ideas for the project. Nami however is going there for answers. After first arriving at the mansion to find the garden in full bloom with ST John's Wort. The flower we are to discover means 'REVENGE' in old Japanese poetry, it also happens to be the dying words of Nami's Mother/Auntie. They begin their search of the house and uncover some shocking coincidences. 1/ Nami's father just happens to be Kohei's hero. 2/ Nami has a sister? Naomi? Her twin? 3/ Nami's father has a penchant for mummified children. 4/ On trying to flee the house - the car refuses to start! 5/ Mudslides have closed the roads, so a foot escape is also a no no!! 6/ A tree falls onto the car, negating any future escape!!! Can you see where all this is going? ST John's Wort has an interesting enough story BUT the director has chosen the route of style over content as he seems to have spent more time on his flashy camera tricks than the actual story direction of the film. One moment he is building the viewers up to a peak and then in an instant he drops us down with worn out cliches and overused US horror movie scenarios. I really think this movie could have been outstanding but was let down with some ridiculous plot twists. The biggest mistake ( in my opinion) is the films finale which was beautifully shot and really dragged me in but I was shocked the director decided to offer a different slant on this and offer up a much more infereior ending than was initially offered. 6******stars. Watch this to see how good it COULD have been. |
