THE AVENGING FIST Starring - Wang Lee Hom - Stephen Fung - Sammo Hung - Kristy Yang - Yuen Biao. Directed by - Andy Lau / Corey Yuen. Humans only use 10% of their brains capacity. The other 90 % is known as the ‘Forbidden Zone’. Three years after the global treaty to abolish all weapons one hundred policemen participated in ‘The power glove’ experiment to try and develop a capable defensive device for the police force. The experiment focussed on releasing energy from the Forbidden zone in conjunction with the glove. However the experiment was abandoned when it was revealed that accessing the Forbidden zone could cause serious and varying side effects. At the same time scientists also tried to replace the glove with scientifically engineered gene splicing. Thunder a senior combat coach for the police is chosen and his sperm are genetically modified enabling the unborn children to access the Forbidden zone without the aid of the glove. Twins ‘Nova’ and ‘Belle’ are born. Not wanting the twins to become lab rats, ‘Wing’ their mother takes them and the data for the martial arts form ‘The avenging fist’ and escapes into hiding. I did enjoy this movie, visually it is very good and it draws you in comfortably. The all star cast whilst not given too much to do portray their characters well and are all endearing in their own little ways. I enjoyed also seeing the devilishly evil Roy Cheung as Combat 21, he always seems to radiate an air of complete arrogance and contempt and for that I salute him. At times the visuals and the character dialogues are extremely cheesy but even these things can be overlooked as the film moves at such a fast pace you are never left to dwell on any one issue for too long. The action on offer leans much more towards the SFX driven fight scenes rather than traditional martial arts, now this was the only real draw back for me. I think the director could have employed much stronger traditional fights and played down the effects a little. With all the talent on offer in this film I am positive they could have done something a little more special. The films finale was a prime example ending extremely abruptly and relying heavily on the SFX available. Apart from that I cannot see much wrong with ‘The avenging fist’ it is a fast paced action movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously and encompasses some of my personal favourite plot themes. Love, honour, murder, revenge and the total devastation of the majority of the key cast. Set some time in the future Avenging Fist immediately draws comparisons with the epic ‘Blade Runner’ not only with it’s rich visuals but also with some of the plot elements too, the main one being that of the impending death of the character ‘Dark’. Just as is with Rutger Hauer’s character in BR they both know when there time is up. The avenging fist does everything it promises too and entertains throughout. 8********stars.
