BT Belgium is the Belgian subsidiary of the well-known BT (UK), formerly British Telecom. Even if BT has been present in Belgium since 1988, the first BT phone booths appeared in Gent-Sint-Pieters (Flanders) at the end of 1999.
As BT concluded a contract with B Telecom, the SNCB/NMVS subsidiary dealing with telecommunication matters, BT phone booths could only be seen (for the moment) at SNCB/NMVS stations… Belgacom having the monopoly for the setting up of public phone booths everywhere else. At least some of them as the setting up has been stopped due to the high penetration of mobiles within the Belgian society.
Moreover, these new payphones are quite confidential, as many people
haven't noticed yet they were installed. It is not unusual at all to see
people desperately trying to phone with a Belgacom telecard, using a BT
phone! Furthermore, I have to say most stations have not been equipped
yet, including for instance the biggest one in Brussels (Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel-Zuid).
Finally, even in the stations equipped with BT payphones, it is no
longer possible to buy a BT card. Since January 2002, BT phones only accept
€ coins.
BT phonecards
BT phonecards are sold in blister, the cards being enclosed inside a
folder
explaining how to use BT cards, but also giving to (new) customers all
the BT tariffs.
