"You come across as a very ruthless and single minded man, Charles, who cares only about the Daedalus and who would trample over everything and everyone to get his own way." - Harriet Bullock

On the Ilea's bridge, Finbow tells Brelan that all systems are functioning normally. Harriet joins them, and tells the Professor that they must establish how the college will function under the present system. He tells her that the trip to Amalthea will take five days, and depending on what they find, they will be back at Callisto in around twelve days. She is suspicious of the convenient sudden emergency that has resulted in the Ilea being handed over to him, but he assures her that he is only interested in the rescue operation.

On Callisto, Melody and Sara wait for the next shuttle. They ask a passing officer when the next shuttle to the Ilea is due. He tells them in around ten or fifteen days time!

Harriet tells Brelan that she wishes there was more she could do to help. He says he can offer his services, and offers to take lectures.

Sara contacts her Bob from their scruffy room in the hostel, and tells him they have been left behind. Melody has sent a fax to the Orphans Office. Neither have any money.

Chantal joins Mercedes on the bridge. She asks Mercedes if she has talked to James, who is continuing his work at Valhalla, having changed his mind yet again about Daedalus. Chantal tells her that James has to go on Daedalus.

Brelan is holding a lecture on Copernicus, the sixteenth century scientist. Anna asks if it is part of the syllabus, but Brelan upsets her by telling her that if she took less notice of the syllabus and spent more time learning, she might do better. Brelan argues with Daniel, calling him a time waster and a failure. Harriet interrupts him, and stops the lecture overunning.

As they exercise in the gym, Daniel complains to Chantal about Brelan. She tells him not to antagonise him because as Professor Emeritus, he could have Daniel expelled or put to work on the construction gangs. She wonders why he has not already done both.

Anna tells Mercedes that she was sorry that James left, but Brelan really cares about teaching. Mercedes tells her that Brelan will not be taking James' place permanently. Mercedes wonders why Anna apllied for Columbus, as she doesn't believe Daniel's story that there were two Anna Begani's, one the daughter of a physicist, and one the daughter of a greengrocer! Anna asks why the grocer's daughter could not have been the clever one. She sat the exam with every other sixteen year old in her village and came top. Mercedes wonders how many sixteen year olds were there in her village...

Rosie has a drink with Pegleg Johnson in the Stardust Cafe. She tells him that although she is on holiday, she is worried about Eliot's drinking and Timmy's allergy. He tells her that the college doesn't deserve her. He invites her to dinner, and she agrees.

The Commissioner tells Sara and Melody that they will have to stay at the hostel. They tell him that they really need some money... for drinks, make-up, and new clothes!

Brelan takes the afternoon lecture. Daniel annoys him with his knowledge of the subject.

In a corridor, Harriet tells Chantal that she is now more comfortable with Brelan, but Chantal thinks he is just bored and wants something to do. Anna runs down the corridor in tears and tells them he is horrible. Chantal goes after her.

Over dinner, Rosie tells Pegleg that Timmy may be suffering from a "space computer allergy", an allergy against the stuff put in computers to protect them from dust and static. She is also worried about Fiona, half way through her first year and her parents want her back on Mars on the next liner. She tells him she wants to forget about the students, and asks him about his work. Pegleg tells her that as a Commission Liason Officer he will probably go on Daedalus. Sara and Melody arrive and tell Rosie about being left behind and that the Commissioner won't lift a finger to help. They want her to tell them what to do. She tells them to jump in a lake.

Brelan talks to Finbow about possible salvage when Harriet storms onto the bridge and demands to talk to him about Anna. He tells her that Anna is stupid. She tells him he was cruel and that he made her a laughing stock. Brelan says her cannot bear waste of talent, and he hates lazy people dragging back their peers. She tells him he is persona non grata at Columbus and, in response, he bans her from the bridge. Finbow, who has been trying to interrupt them, shouts at them both to shut up. He thinks he is getting a distress signal...

Rosie visits the Commissioner in his office. He tells her that the Astrophysics Research Council team on Leda are looking for a Project Manager. It would be a promotion for her. He also wants to talk to her about Timothy Shaw. He hands her Timmy's test results, and tells her he is sorry...
