Here are some handy-dandy microwave hints to help you in all of your culinary experiments.

  • Bacon: Place bacon on a microwave-safe rack or a plate lined with paper towels. Cook on 100% power(high) till done. Allow 1.5 to 2 minutes for 2 slices, 2.5-3.5 minutes for 4 slices, and 4-5 minutes for 6 slices.

  • Butter or margarine, melting: In a bowl heat butter or margarine, uncovered, on 100% power (high) 35 to 45 seconds for 2 tablespoons, 45 to 60 seconds for 1/4 cup, or 1 to 1.5 minutes(about 45 seconds in high wattage ovens) for 1/2 cup.

  • Chicken: Arrange 12 ounces skinless, boneless chicken breasts in a baking dish, tucking under thin portions. Cover with clear plastic wrap; fold back one corner, leaving about a 1-inch opening. Cook on 100% power (high) for 4-6 minutes or till chicken is tender and no longer pink, rearranging pieces after 2 minutes. This makes enough for 2 cubs cubed, cooked chicken.

  • Coconut, toasting: In a 2-cup measure cook 1 cup coconut, uncovered, on 100% power (high) for 2.5-3.5 minutes, or till toasted, stirring after 1 minute, then stirring every 30 seconds.

  • Lemons, juicing: Halve or quarter 1 lemon. Heat on 100% power (high) 20 to 45 seconds. Squeeze out juice.

  • Meat, ground: Crumble 1 pund ground meat into a 1.5-quart casserole. Cook, covered, on 100% power (high) till no pink remains, stirring once or twice. Allow 3-5 minutes for beef or pork and 4-6 minutes for chicken or turkey. Drain off fat.

  • Muffins and rolls, reheating: Place muffins or rolls on a plate. heat, uncovered, on 100% power (high) for 10-20 seconds for 1-2 minures for 1 or 2 muffins or 30-60 seconds for 4 muffins. [what about 3 muffins?]

  • Pancake syrup, heating: Heat syrup, uncovered, on 100% power (high) for 1/2 cup(30 to 60 seconds for 1 cup) or till warm.

  • Pie (fruit), warming: Place one slice of fruit pie on a plated. Heat, uncovered, on 100% power (high) for 45 to 60 seconds (about 20 seconds in high wattage ovens).

  • Tortillas, softening: Place four 6- to 7-inch flour tortillas between paper towels. Heat on 100% power (high) for 20 to 30 seconds or till softened.
