Viva Forever
1997 had been the one year in Mulder and Scully's lives they would
never forget. So many things had happened that neither of them
could have imagined, from Scully's cancer to Agent Danny's murder
to the death of Scully's newly found daughter.
They started 1998 off right by deciding to slowly tell the world
about their relationship. Little by little, people started to
notice but they just said it was a deep friendship and nothing
else. It was a formal Bureau function, that Mulder and Scully
decided to "come out" with their relationship. Arriving separately,
no one suspected anything was out of the usual with then until
Mulder pulled Scully into the middle of a dance floor.
Mulder had wanted their relationship known but Scully had argued
with them saying they'd loose their jobs if anyone knew. When then
heard about the party, Mulder decided to announce it at something
formal.

The Retirement Party
Dana Scully let out a deep sigh before entering the large room.
Normally, she had no problem attending Bureau galas, but for some
reason, the hair in the back of her neck stood up on end. she asked herself as she entered the main
ballroom.
Her dress was made of dark green velvet with a hint of lace around
the off-set shoulders. This was something that she knew she'd never
wear in public but when she saw it in the store, Scully knew that
one day she would wear it.
After making her away around the decorated tables, Scully began to
say her 'hellos' to several fellow agents and directors she knew.
Dana stopped dead in her tracks as she saw her own superior.
He was... laughing???
Dana didn't know what to say, she was completely speechless.
Picking up a drink from a nearby waiter, she turned to walk over
when someone approached her from behind.
"So what do you think?" Fox Mulder asked.
"I don't know." Scully turned to face her partner. "I kind of like
it, but I do suggest that we take a picture of him and assign it to
an x-file."
"I'm way a head of you Scully," Mulder smiled as he held out a
beeper-sized camera. "Borrowed it from the boys on the way over."
"Well this seems to be a night of surprises." Scully smiled.
"Why?" Mulder looked down at his best friend and secret lover.
"Well look at you, you look great. That tux really suits you."
Scully smiled. she thought.
Mulder looked down, he had on a black tuxedo with a green bow tie
and matching vest underneath. "This old thing?"
"I haven't seen you this well dressed in a while." she blushed as she remembered the previous
night at her apartment.
"Thanks, Dana. You look great too." Mulder was beginning to sense
people beginning to stare, so he took Scully's arm and lead her
aside.
"Mulder, what are you doing?" She whispered when they were out of
ear shot.
"Look, I know that you don't want anyone here to know about us but
I think it's time, Dana. In a way, I think that they sort of
suspect something anyways especially after this past year." He
hinted to several people who where looking at them. "I don't know
how to but it, so I'll go straight to the point. Dana, I want them
to know about us, I want the entire world to know about *us*."
Scully moved two fingers up to his lips. "I understand completely,
seeing you like this made me think about what we talked about and
I agree that everyone should know." Dana looked over his shoulder,
and whispered in his ear. "But now is not the time because here
comes Skinner. Can we talk about this later?"
Mulder nodded. As much as he loved Scully, he knew that they needed
to discuss the "coming out" in more detail. "This will be
interesting," he whispered. "Sir, hello." Mulder reached out his
hand toward the AD.
"Agents Mulder and Scully," Walter Skinner nodded. "Good to see
that you came."
"Sir, I have to say," Scully began. "I don't think I've ever seen
you this, uh, relaxed."
"Yes well this functions can be terribly boring unless find a way
to make it better," Skinner replied as he turned in the direction
of his name being called by another AD. "If you two will excuse
me."
Mulder nodded as he and Scully watched Skinner disappear into the
crowd. "What was that all about?" Scully just shrugged.
"Viva Forever" cut the now sudden silence between the partners.
Scully looked at the dance floor then at Mulder. "I think it's time
to liven up the party." With an devilish smile on her face, she
looked up at him. "Care for to cut a rug?"
Mulder coughed. "I'm sorry, did you just ask me to dance?"
"Yes Mulder I did." Scully took his hand in hers and headed for the
dance floor. "And your answer is yes."
"That's not exactly what I said." Mulder wrapped his arm around
Scully as he twirled her around. "But it's close enough."
As Mulder led Scully around the dance floor, she felt like that
nothing in the world could separate them.
There was nothing but the two of them. Literally, they were the
only two on the dance floor.
On the sides, the higher ups that were watching them and making
mental notes to have them separated while the younger agents were
settling up long standing wagers.
It didn't matter... they didn't care. All that was on their minds
was a feeling of relief. No more looking behind their backs as they
walked closely down a hall way, no more meeting in secrecy, no more
worrying about who knew about them.
It was all out in the open. Like they wanted from day one.
After several songs, Mulder and Scully walked off the dance floor,
arms around each other and toward the hall way. Fox locked eyes
with jealous male agents as he walked by and just grinned.
Scully thought as she felt like they were
being followed. "I think we're being tailed."
Mulder looked over his shoulder and smiled. "Yeah. So, what do we
have to loose?"
"Other then our jobs?"
"Technicalities my sweet Dana, they're just technicalities." Mulder
grabbed their coats and continued to lead her away from ball room.
"Can we live off of your technicalities, Fox?" Scully smiled as
Mulder helped her put on her coat.
"Dana, in my world, there's no such thing as technicalities," he
pulled her into a kiss before motioning to the balcony behind them.
Scully pulled on the jacket. "Now what? We can't exactly show
ourselves back in there, and I can bet you that Skinner will yell
at us tomorrow." Scully's happiness disappeared as she walked
outside, thinking about her future at the Bureau. Or lack there
of.
Mulder stood behind Scully and held close as the cold D.C. air blew
around them. "A penny for your thoughts."
Turning her head from looking up into the night's sky, Scully
smiled up at Mulder. Her best friend, FBI partner and secret lover.
"Did you ever notice that no matter how we've learned about what's
up there, it's the stars, moons and planets that are still
fascinating in the way that they seem to twinkle at you when you
look up at them? I know scientifically they don't twinkle but
still, there's something about them that makes you want to reach up
and touch them."
Mulder gave her a grin. "Yeah I understand completely. After
Samantha's disappearance, I used to stare up at the stars hoping to
catch a glimpse of whatever had taken her." He paused only to shift
his weight from one leg to the other. "And now after these years of
searching to find out that she's alive and has a family hurts.
There is so much I want to tell her, I never got to tell her about
you and me or even where I lived if she wanted to contact me."
Dana slowly let out the breath she was holding, she felt so deeply
for him and his troubles with his sister. "Mulder, I don't if this
will help or not, but I got something for you." She dug into her
jacket pocket and pulled out a tiny little scroll wrapped with a
red ribbon. "I was saving this for something special."
Mulder looked at the scroll, it was four inches in length with a
neatly tied ribbon. "I don't know what to say."
"Well open it then." Scully smiled as she hoped he liked the
present.
He carefully opened the scroll and read the message. "You got me a
star?"
"Yeah, it was that or 5 acres on Mars. I figured you'd like this
more." Dana smiled.
Leaning down, he kissed her on the lips. "I love it. Now when I
look up at the night's sky, I can proudly say I own part of it."
"I got is so that if we're ever separated, you can look up into the
sky and know that I'm looking up at the same star." Dana looked up
at the sky. "Want to know where your star is?"
"Please," Mulder was eager to know.
Scully turned around until she found it. "There, beside that
reddish one, that's our star."
"What's the red one?"
"Venus."
"The Italian Goddess of fertility and whom the romans equated with
Aphrodite."
"I supposed so." Scully was caught off guard with Mulder's reply.
"I never knew you were into that mythology."
"I started liking it back in high school, but watching Xena makes
it so much fun. Do you have any idea how many times they mix-up
history in each episode?"
"No, sorry I don't."
"Well Dana, I suggest we plan a Xena-marathon this weekend." Mulder
chuckled. "You're missing one hell of a show."

The Present
It had been six months to the day since the retirement party and
not much had happened to break them up. Scully had been
occasionally sent to Quantico to teach while Mulder was loaned out
to the Violent Crimes Unit to do profiles.
It was late after a long night of doing paperwork, when Scully had
suggested they grab dinner somewhere as they walked to his car.
Mulder smiled and made a plan to head to west out of Washington.
A short while later...
"Where are we going?" Scully asked as he drove past the exit to his
apartment.
"I though we could use a drink," Mulder pulled off the highway a
short while later and drove down a county side road.
"Sure but there's no bars out here." Scully looked out the window
at the passing farms and corn fields. "There's nothing out here but
you and me."
"I know." He gave her a quick smile as he slowed the car down and
pulled the car off the side of the road. "We're here."
"Where exactly is here?"
Mulder walked around to Scully's side and opened her door. "Do you
trust me?"
A simple nod let him know her answer. "Good," Mulder made her cover
her eyes with her hands as he went for the items in the trunk.
"Just wait here a sec."
"Mulder?"
"I'm right here," he answered.
Scully spun on her heal and gave him a friendly slap on the arm.
"Don't do that, you know I hate it when you do it."
"I know." He smiled as he took her hand. "Come on lets go, Dana."
Fox led Dana into a field of tall grass to where a special spot had
been cleared. After setting down a picnic hamper and laying out a
blanket, he pulled her hands away from her eyes.
Dana's eyes lit up. "Oh Fox," leaning towards him, she gave him a
kiss on the lips. "You read my mind." They were standing in a
clearing that had been cut in the shape of a heart.
he smiled as he thought back to
finding her diary. Carefully, he spread the blanket and set down
the wicker basket in his hand. "I don't know if you know what night
it is but either way, I thought you needed a little reminder."
"I know what night it is," Scully gave him a warm smile. "It's been
six months since we crashed that boring party."
"That was so priceless... seeing all those losers like Colton
stomping their feet in anger as they lost money in old bets."
"Yeah," she smiled. "But it was
all worth it."
"Definitely, then again, the celebration in your bed was just as
memorable."
Scully blushed. "How could I forget, the handcuffs are still
attached to the headboard, not to mention the body oils spilt down
the wall beside my bed." They both started laughing as the
memories flashed in their minds. "Fox Mulder, whatever would I do
without you?"
Mulder thought about it for a second and with a chuckle he replied.
"I think you would mope around your apartment and the rest of D.C.
looking for me. In a way, like a lost puppy dog."
Dana brushed aside a strand of hair. "You are comparing me to a
lost puppy dog?" She lifted an eyebrow. "Does that mean I belong to
you?"
"Yes," Fox said promptly as his partner looked confused. "Remember,
you have me your heart and soul." He skilfully opened a bottle of
chilled wine and poured it into two glasses.
"Ah yes and you did the same." She shifted so that her head was
lightly resting against his shoulder and sipped her glass of wine.
"As far as I'm concerned, they can't do anything to us as long as
we have each other." Mulder said with all his heart. "Look at all
we battled last year."
Scully moaned. "Please Mulder, how could we forget the Peacock
brothers, the satan-loving plastic surgeon, and the Mexican goat
brothers."
"I could never forget them." Mulder replied with a chuckle. "Or
Krycek's return, that guy from the future who tried to kill himself
and the deaths of Max and Agent Pendrell."
"Pendrell... I miss him." Scully wiped away a tear.
"He was a great agent. Did you know that he had a big crush on
you?" Mulder asked.
"No," Scully shook her head.
"Yes, remember that Teliko case?" She nodded. "I went to see him
about some information and when he asked for you, he was
disappointed when you didn't come too."
Scully thought. "He took that bullet for me." She
pounded the ground with her fist. "Damn it. It's just not fair, he
shouldn't have died."
"I know, but he died a hero." Mulder took her hand in his. "Dana,
some good things did happen this year."
"Like what?"
"Well for starters, we didn't loose any siblings or parents."
"I gained and lost a daughter in the matter of a week," Dana
snapped, it was still a touchy subject. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean
to snap at you. You found out that Samantha is alive which is
good."
"But I lost her again." Mulder lifted Scully's chin. "And I nearly
lost you too."
"I know," she whispered. "I nearly lost my job when you faked your
death." Scully waved a finger at him. "You owe me big time for that
one."
"How ever will I make it up to you?" Mulder winked. "Care to repeat
last night's events?"
"No, it's okay." Scully was still a little sore from it. "But you
can start by stopping by my apartment with a bottle of red wine and
maybe a nice meal too."
"But that's what Eddie van Blundht did."
"Oh right." Scully blushed as she laid back against the blanket,
looking up at the stars. "There's
our star." She pointed.
"The one and only."
"Mulder, I'm curious. Did you ever believe we were alone in the
universe? I mean even though we've proved over the years that the
majority of it is just a large conspiracy."
Mulder put an arm around her, holding her close. "Once I believed
that we were alone, but that was before I met you. Now as long as
we have each other and our star, we are never alone."
*** The End ***
*** Finished: January 5th, 1998 ***
"But we're all alone now, was it just a dream
Feelings untold, they will never be sold
And the secret's safe with me.
Hasta manana, always be mine
Viva forever, I'll be waiting
Everlasting, like the sun
Live forever, for the moment
Ever searching for the sun"
