Daria Fanfiction--ON THE ROAD AGAIN
by Riverboy

(Scene 1)-The Lane basement. Daria and Jane are watching Trent and the
entire band practice.

Trent(singing)- From the futon, from the futon, I'm in limbo, how low can
I go? (they finish)

Jane-You spend weeks practicing that riff over and over, and these are the
best lyrics you can think of? I'm surprised at you.

Daria-Do you plan to release it anytime soon?

Trent-No, but we will play it for the first time at our gig in Oakwood on
Friday.

Jane-Oakwood? Uh-oh.

Trent-What?

Jane-You're not telling me you don't remember.

Trent-Remember what?

Jane-(to Daria)Figures.(back to Trent) Remember back in '92, "The Game"?

(Trent thinks for a moment, and says) Oh yeah. "The Game".

Daria-What?

Jane-Sit down. Back in '92, there was a playoff game between our football
team and theirs. With 6 seconds to go, the score was tied at 19. Our team
made a big play and scored a touchdown. Oakwood didn't agree with it, and
a brawl ensued, and the school got trashed. The 2 sides have been bitter
ever since. Besides, you're going 20 miles to play 3 songs?

Jesse-Oh, no. We'll be playing with another band.

Max-Their name is Bad Reception or something like that.

Trent-And, Jane, since I hate to see you bored...

Jane-OK, we'll come. And I'll bring my little friend here, too. We'll have
fun, won't we?

Daria-(thinking: Do I have a choice?) Sure.

(Scene 2)-The open road on Friday. Daria, Jane, and Trent are in his car,
while Jesse, Nick, and Max are in the Tank with the equipment. They are
driving into Oakwood, a much larger city than Lawndale. Both cars are
driving through downtown.

Jesse-Now, Max, are you sure this thing is OK?

Max-Oh, sure. I checked it out today.

(All is fine until...POP!...clunk...the Tank pulls over into an empty
parking lot. Trent does the same.)

Trent-(getting out of the car)What's up?

Jesse-Something went POP! under the hood. I thought you looked it over,
Max.

Nicholas-Well, whatever this glue was doing, it ain't doing it no more.
(Jane grimaces)

Daria-Well, here we are in a foreign city with a broken down van. I'm
having the time of my life.

Trent-Who do we ask for help?

Jane-How 'bout him? He looks promising.

(She spots a boy, about 15, with mop-top like, stringy black hair. He is
wearing a red shirt with a blue jacket, black jeans, and work boots.)

Jane-Yo, kid!

(The boy notices her, and raises his eyebrows. She motions for him to
"come here". He comes over.)

Boy-Yo, what's up?

Trent-Our van's busted, man, anything you can do?

Boy-I can't do anything, but there's a service station about 15 blocks
from here.

Trent-(Sighs) Good-bye, gig.

Boy-Weird. I gotta gig at 8:00

Trent-Hmmm. Cool us too. Where at?

Boy-The 50/50 club.

Trent-Us too! What's your band's name?

Boy-Bad Reception. (All 6 of them raise their eyebrows.) And I'm assuming
you're Mystik Spiral.

Trent-That'd be us. What's your name?

Boy-Zach. You?

Trent-I'm Trent. That's Jesse, that's our drummer, Max, and our bassist,
Nicholas. This is my sister Jane, and her friend Daria. (Zach shakes all
their hands except Daria's)

Zach-What a coincidence. In this case, there's another service station 2
blocks away.

Daria-But didn't you just say...

Zach-I know. I do that to everyone. But you guys are cool.

Jane-(To Daria) I like his style. And he's sorta cute. (Daria glares at
her.) What?

(Scene 3)- The service station. Time - 5:45

Man-Wow. This whole thing's on it's last leg.

Max-Say it ain't so!!

Man-I can replace the engine and all for $300.

Trent-$300? Wow. When will it be ready?

Man-Oh I'd say tomorrow afternoon.

Jesse-Great. Zach, how far's the club from here?

Zach-It's down the street.

Trent-Good. You take Janey, Daria, Max and Nick down there. Jess and I
will take the car and take it down there.

(Scene 4)- The 50/50 club...backstage. Time 7:00. Trent and Jesse are
bringing the last of the equipment in. Zach, Jane, Daria, Max and Nick are
sitting around. Zach is tuning his guitar.

Zach-Oh, hey guys. I'd like you to meet the reat of the band. This is
Mark, the bassist, over there is the drummer, Mike and that's the other
guitarist, Adam. Guys, this is Trent and Jesse.

(They all shake hands.)

Trent-So what's the deal here?

Mark-You're opening for us.

Trent-Well, then we'd better go hook all this up.

(Scene 5)- The stage. There are about 5 people in the seats which looks
like it could seat over 500 people. There is a large pit near the stage.

Trent-Wow, this place is huge!

Zach-Well, it ain't no trash can.

Trent-The brew-pub we usually play at can only seat 125 people.

Zach-You better get going. You have only 45 minutes.

Trent-Crap! Can you help us with this?

Zach-Sure.

(Scene 6)-The stage at 7:50. After minutes of struggling with the wires
and getting shocked about a dozen times, it's finally all set up. The
place is packed.

Trent-(Looking from behind a curtain.) Whoa. That's a lot of people. I
never played in front of this many people before.

Zach-Don't worry.

Trent-C'mon guys! Get ready!

(Scene 7)-Showtime. Trent has his guitar strapped on. He walks up to the
mic and is visibly nervous.

Trent-Hey. How's it going?

(A loud roar emits from the crowd. Trent eases up.)

Trent-Well, get ready for the ride of your life.

(He starts on the opening chords of " Icebox Woman " and the crowd get into it.)

(Scene 8)-After the MS set at intermission.

Trent-Wow. That was a rush!

Jesse-I've never seen the crowd get into the music like that. Usually
there's a huge brawl.

Mark-Now, just wait until we get out there.

Nick-How many gigs have you preformed in all?

Adam-9. This is our first one here.

Trent-In only 9 gigs, you developed an audience this large?

Mike-This is a very musical city. People here are so into music that it
ain't funny.

(Meanwhile..Jane and Daria are walking around the lobby looking for
something to eat.)

Jane-I've never seen a crowd like that before.

Daria-The only crowd you've seen is the "in" crowd in school.

Jane-He never get crowds over 25 people. Maybe he has a good luck charm.

Daria-Maybe it's the fact that people were here to see Zach's band.

Jane-Maybe you're his good luck charm.

Daria-Maybe you'd be interested in a knuckle sandwich.

Jane-Stop. You're making me more hungry.

Daria-Like I said, we're just friends.

Jane-Like you said there'd be some concession stands out here.

(Scene 9)-Zach and Mark are finishing hooking up the amps to the guitars
and soon...

Mark-That's the last of it.

Zach-We gotta get out there.

(The band goes out on stage and plays a song called called "When." The
members of MS are watching from the side of the stage behind the curtain.
After the song is done...)

Zach-(Yelling.) WHAT'S UP? (The crowd goes wild.) Well check this out!
You'll love this.

(The band starts playing "Galaxy" by 311. People are moshing left and
right. Afterwards...)

Zach-I heard you guys liked that Mystik Spiral set. (Crowd cheers.) Well
here's a little treat for you.

(Looks to side that MS is on.)

Zach-Trent, get your ass out here!! ( Trent brings his guitar and goes on
stage. The crowd goes nuts. Zach wispers something in your ear. Trent
nods. Zach gives the band a nod. They respond with a nod. Meanwhile...)

Jane-What's he doing? (They start playing " Smells Like Teen Spirit " by
Nirvana.) YES!! (She starts banging her head. Daria gives her a weird
look.) What? Can't I have a good time?

(Scene 10) Afterwards. All 10 of them are out by Trent's car

Trent-This was a great expirence.

Zach-(Putting the guitars in the trunk.) I'll say.

Jesse-This just occured to me. We have no place to go.

Mike-Why don't we take them to the bandhouse and...

Mark-What the hell are you thinking? These are the guests.

Zach-I'll put you up at my house. My parents are out of town. We'll have
to squeeze into the car.

(Trent, Jesse, and Max get in front. Zach, Mark, Adam, and Mike get in
back. Jane sits on Zach's lap, Daria sits on Mark's lap, and Nick sits on
Adam's lap.)

(Scene 11) Zach's house, a nice, quaint suburban home. Zach unlocks the
door and everyone goes inside.

Zach-Have a seat.

Jane-We never did find a concession stand, Daria.

Zach-The fridge is over there. Knock yourselves out.

(Daria and Jane race towards the fridge.)

Zach-I'm going to bring my CD player out. (Zach goes off-screen. The crew
looks around.)

(Scene 12)-Zach's living room. It has a yellow couch with a big screen TV.
Zach brings his CD player. He puts on "Killing in the Name" by Rage
Against the Machine.

Mark-This song kicks!

Jane-Yo, is that Rage?

Mark-Gimmie a hell yeah!

All except Daria: Hell yeah!

Trent-Killing in the name of!

Zach-Yeah!

Daria-Who is this?

Jane-Rage Against the Machine! (Music keeps playing, but Daria doesn't
look like she is having a good time. Mike walks over to her.)

Mike-So do you have any brothers or sisters?

Daria-(Thinks-Did he have to say that?) Yeah, a sister named Quinn. She's
Vice-President of the Fashion Club, a boys magnet, and still manages to
make me bang my head against my padded walls.

Mike-(Out loud.) Padded walls? (The music stops, and the other 3 band
members come over.)

Daria-(Sigh.) Story time.

(She explains basically her entire life to the boys.)

Mike-I've got to see this. Where do you live?

Daria-The 7th layer of hell.

Mike-Cool! My family's from Lawndale too!

Daria-Got that right.

(Scene 13) Back in the living room later that night. They are getting
ready to sleep. Girls in the TV room, boys in the living room.

Max-2 & 8? Shouldn't we even it out a little?

Jane-I know!! We could bring... (Daria shoots a mean look at her before
she can even utter the word "Trent." She mumbles something barely
audible.)

(Scene 14)-The next morning at about 10:30 AM. Everyone is dressed in
regular clothing. The intro to Jimmie's Chicken Shack's "Dropping
Anchor" plays lightly in the background.

Zach-Well, can I get anyone anything?

Daria-No, I'm going for my daily morning walk.

Jane-You never go for a morning walk.

Daria-Well...er...now's a good time to start. (Rushes out of the house.)

Zach-I'd better follow her, you know, 'cause this isn't a great
neighborhood to be alone in. (Rushes out the door.)

(Scene 15)-The street, a curvy, hilly street. Daria is walking with her
hands in her jacket pockets. The music swells, and the guitars pick up
tempo.

Zach-Yo! Wait up! (She turns around.) What's wrong?

Daria-(Mumbles.) Mmm...nothing.

Zach-Spit it out.

Daria-I said nothing!

Zach-I know what you think of me and my friends. Just because I'm in a
band doesn't mean I have brains.

Daria-(They start walking. Sarcastically.) Oh, really?

Zach-It's the truth! I go to school in the preppy part of town. I used to
be like them, but one day I woke up and said, "What am I doing?" I was
tired of not being able to think for myself, so I changed, and I became
the most hated, unpopular kid in school. That's when I found these guys,
and you might think I'm popular because of that, but I'm not, and neither
are they. And you know what? I'm all right with that. Even if I lose
everything over it, I'd rather be with my brains than in a herd of
mindless oafs.

Daria-OK...then why DID you decide to join a band?

Zach-To send a message to people that you can actually think for yourself,
and that you don't have to be a part of some clique. That's not going
well. Sometimes I feel like giving up.

Daria-I'm going to tell you the same thing I told Trent a while back. It
takes guts to go after a dream like that. You're doing all you can to
fight society's oppressive, mind numbing rules. Music is the best way to
do that. And one day us "brains" might win the fight. Until then, I'm for
you guys.

Zach-Gee, thanks. You're pretty cool.

Daria-You're not so bad yourself. (They smile.)

(Scene 16) Back at home. They walk in the door.

Trent-Where were you two?

Zach-We just stopped and smelled the garbage.

Daria-And see the roadkill, but..if you want me to go into detail...there
WAS an intersting decapitated squirrel.

Jane-Hmm...see any gutted animals?

Daria-Nah.

Jane-I guess you're right. Usually when you run over a squirrel's body,
the pressure is so great it's head pops off.

Daria-That's a "Sick Sad World" episode that writes itself.

Trent-I have to go make a call. (Leaves.)

Zach-I'm gonna put on some music. Anyone bring any tapes?

Jesse-Trent has some out in the car. I don't think he'd mind you getting a
couple of tapes.

Zach-Cool. I'll be back. (Walks out the door. A few minutes later.) I
brought some Korn. He really packs the heavy stuff.

Max-Yeah, he like a lot of Bauhaus, as well as Nine Inch Nails and stuff
like that. It's what fuels our music.

Trent-(Coming into the room.) It may not be the best influence, but it's
a whole lot better than those damn Spice Girls.

Zach- Definitely.

Mark-My gerbils could make better music than them.

Trent-Yeah. Anyway, I just called the shop, The Tank'll be done by about
3. Turns out they only had to replace the battery and various connectors.
So it'll cost less.

Zach-My parents are coming home at about 4, so that gives me time to clean
up. If anyone needs me, I'll be out in the back porch.

(Scene 17) The back porch. Zach is sitting on a chair looking at the sky.
Jane comes out.

Jane-Yo. (Sits down in another chair.)

Zach-Hey. (Silence.) I thought of something. How can you give me those
tips, since we won't see each other that much?

Jane-Well...here. (Hands him a piece of paper.) It's my phone number.
Call me, maybe we can work something out. (Trent comes out.)

Trent-Yo, we'd better get the car loaded and ready to go.

Jane-Uh...we didn't bring anything in the house.

Zach-With the exception of a tape.

Trent-Really? Oh well, more time to sleep. (Goes back inside.)

Zach-Boy, he really likes to sleep, doesn't he?

Jane-Yep, about 15 hours a day. He practices guitar about 10 hours a day.

Zach-Wait a second, doesn't that make 25 hours a day?

Jane-He practices while sleeping. He claims you can practice while
sleeping as long as you don't drop the guitar.

Zach-What a guy.

(Scene 18) About 2:30 PM. Everyone is standing outside the house by
Trent's car.

Zach-(Shakes Trent's hand.) Good show last night.

Trent-Yeah, same to you. If you ever want to do another gig, call us up.
(The two bands shake hands.)

Zach-Well Daria, it's been nice meeting you. (Extends his hand.)

Daria-(Shakes his hand.) I must say, I won't regret this.

Zach-(To Jane.) And same to you Jane. Hopefully someday we'll meet up
again. (Shakes her hand.)

Jane-Same here.

(Everyone else shakes hands.)

Mark-Who knows? Maybe we'll get to visit you in Lawndale one day.

Daria-If you ever do, I suggest you bring cyanide.

(They get in the car and pull out of the driveway. They wave good-bye.)

Zach-Well you guys better go, too. (Band responds "Oh, man." ) Unless you
want to help me clean up.

Adam-(Looks at watch.) Whoa! Look at the time! Gotta split.

Mike-I hear my mom calling me.

Mark-You live halfway across town.

Mike-She...uh...has a very loud voice?

Adam-Speaking of which, how do you get there?

(Mike raises his eyebrows and starts running after the car.)

THE END
