Thoughts For The Week

College Football -- Well Nebraska went out today and blew it. The defense was absolutely blown apart in the first quarter. Colorado was opening Titanic-sized holes and running right through them. The comeback try pooped out when the Huskers couldn't close to a five-point deficit, instead going three-and-out and then giving up a touchdown on the ensuing Colorado possession. It was still a very good year, and Nebraska will most likely be heading to the Fiesta Bowl. The college football world revolves around money, and the BCS will not pass up the chance to draw the guaranteed thousands of Husker fans that a bid would bring.

NBA -- What has gotten into Jamaal Tinsley? I watched this kid for the last two years at Iowa State, and never saw him doing this good in the pros. He's definitely a special player, but 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 23 assists? I don't know where he's getting that from. He can't keep it up too much longer, especially since he can't shoot.

MLB -- I know it's cruel, but I favor contraction of two teams. However, they have the wrong team in the Twins; the Devil Rays have been around for about 40 fewer years and are much less competitive than Minnesota is. If there is contraction this offseason, I'm holding out secret hope that the Royals can somehow nab Vladimir Guerrero in the draft.

NFL -- There it was being revealed on Fox on Thanksgiving, for all the world to see: 52% of people want the Lions to go winless for the season. In reality, there are probably more people that didn't want to admit it, because it's one of those taboo feelings that people just don't talk about. But I will admit it; I do have a desire to see them go 0-16. This is only natural, nothing against the Lions. Of course, if you look at their upcoming schedule, guess who is on there: Kansas City. So you know they are going to win that one; when San Diego went 1-15 last year, who do you think was the only team that they beat?
Fantasy Games Update

I have teamed up with Joe James to purchase an ESPN Classic Baseball team. The season will be 162 simulated games, with 18 games per week. Our team has drafted, and features some tough pitching and scrappy hitting. Our home park is Hilltop Park of 1903, which was one of those cavernous old time fields that runs about 526 feet out to center and over 400 feet down the alleys. This will be beneficial to our big-time pitchers, lefties Warren Spahn and Preacher Roe, and righties Chief Bender and Three Finger Brown. The hitting attack is led by speedster Lou Brock, hits man Pete Rose, and powerful Al Rosen.

This seems to be my best ESPN game by far. I got off to hot start and my ranking topped out at #37 in the world (out of tens of thousands). It was the first time I had made the Leaderboard (top 50 list) in any game. Right now I'm slumping a bit but I will pull out of it.

I have three football teams this year, and basically they all suck. The best one is floating around .500 and has a good shot to make the playoffs as a wild card. The poor performances can partially be attributed to the horrid season by Eddie George, who was on two of the teams. Unlike last year, I didn't really get any good sleeper picks all year. My best pick on any team was Curtis Martin, who is the top running back right now. Oh well, maybe next year.

My basketball teams are both doing fairly well so far. Unlike most other teams in my leagues, I haven't been rotating my guys like crazy, so I will have some extra games available later for a stretch run. My $35 league that I am in is challenging for the top spot at the moment, after holding that spot for the past couple of weeks. It's led by Tracy McGrady, Paul Pierce, and Peja Stojakovic. Unlike football, I have been able to make some big waiver pickups, like Derrick Coleman, Tony Parker, and Aaron McKie. The overall basketball prognosis is very good.
