Alice could here the commotion upstairs, She looked over at Lexy and saw that she was crying. "Lexy, Jeremy's going to be O.K., Pa sent for Rebecca." Alice walked over and gave Lexy a big hug " He's going to be okay. She frantically tried to think of something to preoccupy Lexy with. She said the first thing that came to mind."Why don't you show me what you did in school today?" So Alice went into the drawing room with Lexy and they went over the things Lexy had done with her tutor. They sat on the couch and talked until Lexy fell asleep on Alice's lap. Ned walked in and saw Lexy and Alice both sleeping on the couch. He was glad they were getting some rest. He retrieved a blanked from the closet and covered them. and ********************************************************************** Isiac and Rebecca were riding as fast as the horse could go. Rebecca thought she was going to fall off if Isiac didn't slow down, but soon they came around the last turn before the house and Rebecca could see the lights through the trees. As they road up to the house Clay came out and helped Rebecca off the horse. "Where is Jeremy?" Rebecca inquired. "He's upstairs." Clay said. She nodded, took a deep breath and headed towards the door. ********************************************************************** Ned was changing more of Jeremy's bandages when Rebecca walked in. "How is he?" Rebecca questioned. "He's got a really bad wound on his head and has major swelling in his leg." Rebecca walked over and started looking at the wound, careful not to touch it. Ned watched her the whole time, "He woke up a few minutes before you came." Ned told her. "He was very disoriented, and I couldn't get him to speak, and then he fell back to sleep." Ned continued worriedely. Just then Jeremy's eyes opened and he looked at Ned then at Rebecca and started pulling away from her. "Don't let her touch me!! Don't come near me!!" Jeremy yelled at Rebecca. Rebecca put up both of her hands and slowly stepped away from the bed. Ned made a move for him, and the doctor tried to stop him, but was too late. "Jeremy, settle down now son" Ned soothed. "She's here to help you." Jeremy looked at Ned. His eyes were dialated, and glazed. He spoke irrationally and hastely. He was confused and scared. "Get away from me," he yelled, "your not my father and," looking towards Rebecca he said," she's definately not here to help me." Ned took a step back from Jeremy. Hate was just seething from Jeremy. He had never seen him behave so badly before, and it took him a minute to recover his voice. "Now young man you watch you mouth, she is a doctor and is here to help you. You are hurt and need medical attention, and you will behave yourself." Jeremy started to protest, and Ned leveled him with a no-nonsense glare. Jeremy just looked down and sat still on the bed. Rebecca moved towards him, and his head snapped up, his eyes were blazing. She knew he was feverish, and most probably had a concussion. He inched away from her, and she could see Ned growing angrier by the second. "I need to go get something downstairs," she said, "could you help me Mr. Logan," and she nodded towards the door. She decieded that the best way to examine Jeremy would be when he fell back into uncounsciousness. That way he couldn't protest. And the only way that was going to happen is if he was alone. It was dangerous she knew, but she also knew he had a fever, and that it was going to happen anyway. They stepped outside the door, and Ned started to apologize for Jeremy immediately. She held up her hand, and shook her head. There would be time for explanations later. "I need to tell you something, and it's not good," she started. "He's in bad shape. He has a fever, and a concussion. Do you understand what that means," she asked. She waited a minute for this news to settle in. Ned nodded and she continued. "He's may experience episodes of dimensia, and I need to stay and help his fever go down." Ned started to grasp what she was saying. "If there is anything I can do..." he started. He was very upset, and Rebecca didn't want to upset him more, but she couldn't see any sense in sugar coating anything. "He may recover completely, and go right back to normal, he may not. I'm here to try my hardest to see that he does. I need you and the rest of your family to keep watch over him, keep him company and keep him calm. He knows you and trusts you, and that's what will get him through this" she said. "This is going to be hard, please tell your family what I've told you, and prepare them for his condition." Ned nodded, and headed towards the stairs. Rebecca leaned against the wall and took a deep breath. She tried to clam he screaming nerves, and then she turned and walked into Jeremy's room. Thankfully he had drifted away, and she could begin her work. Continued.... |
