The New kid at Lawndale High: Part 4

"That's some pretty intersting poems you got there," Jane said, putting the notebook down.

"Thanks. What did you think, Daria? Some of those were written from a depressed point of view," Jason said.

Daria drank some of her soda. "I liked the one with the stones. I would like to know, how many are supposed to be depressing? The only one of that sort I saw was 'The Yo-Yo,'" Daria said.

Jason swallowed a bite from his burger. "What about 'life?' I was the most depressed when I wrote that one."

"I found that one to be true of real life. People die, and they don't know why. Bitter break-ups happen to people deeply in love. Bad things happen, and people don't accept it. That's what causes depression," she said.

Jason put down his cola before he took a drink from it. "I wish I knew that a long time ago. But then, I would probaly not be who I am now. I would probably be like most of the people in this school."

"Without a brain?" Jane threw in.

"Exactly," Jason said. As he was taking a drink, his little brother came up.

"Hey Jason. Who are the girls?" he said.

"Ryan, I want you to meet Daria and Jane," Jason said, introducing the girls to Ryan.

"Yes, we're homicidal maniacs who want to use your brain for religious purposes. Come here so I can measure it," Daria said.

Ryan made a stupid little smile. "Nice. So, discussing anything interstiong?" he asked.

"We were discussing depression and the effects it has on a personality. I take it you have never been depressed before," Jane asked.

"What do you mean by that?" Ryan asked, angrly.

"Whoa, simmer down dude," Jason said to his little brother. Just then, Kevin and Brittany walked by.

"Hey everybody. Who's the little kid?" Kevin asked.

"I'm Ryan, Jasons brother," he replyed.

"Such a cute little boy. What are you doing here, Ryan?" Brittany no-brainly asked.

"Picking on my brother," Ryan replyed with a tone of acheivment in his voice.

"Cool," Kevin said, looking impressed. Then he said, "Jason, are you going to try out for the football team for next year?"

Smoothly, Jason replyed, "No."

"God, I hope not," Jane said. "Well, I have to go. The art store is going to close soon, and I need a new easal. The old one rotted away. Talk to you later."

"Bye. See you later," Brittany said. "Kevy, I think we should go now. Let them finish their food."

"Cool," Kevin blankly replyed.

"See you later," Daria said. When Kevin and Brittany were out of site, she said, "Airheads."

"So, Jason, as I was going to tell you before, Mom and Dad are here. They want to meet your new friends. They want to talk to you first. Over there," Ryan said, pointing out their parents.

Jason looked at the boot where Ryan pointed to. "Be right back," Jason said, leaving Ryan with Daria. "Ryan, don't scare her, alright?"

"Sure, whatever," Ryan replyed.

Daria looked worried. "Scared?"

"Jason thinks I embarasse him around girls because I act real wierd. I'll go crazy and act like a real fool," Ryan told her. "But it's only to the ones he hasn't meet or asked out. since he has already asked you, I don't have to act like a fool."

"Good, because I don't want to have to kill you. I hate it when people act in stupid ways," Daria told him. "It makes them look stupid, because that is what they are. They act stupid, the are stupid. Simple as that."

Just then, Jason walked back. "They're comming over here. They thought I should break the ice and forwarn you. Here they come."

Jason's dad spoke up. "Hello. You must be Daria. I'm Jason's dad, David. This is his mother, Carolyn," he said.

"Carolyn said, "Hello. You seem like a very nice girl, from what Jason has told us."

"No, I am not a very nice girl. I am in a religious cult that only will let me out to go to school. they will only let me meet with people after school whom they deem pure. Jason happened to be one of them," Daria said, sarcasticly.

David seemed humoured. "I see that you have a thing for sarcasim. A good sense of humor. Well, we just came over to invite you to dinner at our house next Teusday. Is that alright?"

Daria thought for a moment. "Sure. I'll see what I can do," se told them.

"Well, it's been nice meeting you. I'll see you later, Daria," Carolyn said, as her and David were leaving.

"Yes, nice meeting you," David said. They walked away.

"I hope you like Chinise cooking. It's my dad's favorite thing to cook," Jason told Daria.
