The light has fallen, it has become night.
At the hour of others' deaths I awaken,
And rise, wraith-like, to take my place in the shadows.
I feel a stirring from within my blood,
So while the city falls to sleep their dreams,
I hear the cry of my brethren, and take to the sky.

I hunt the city like an animal after blood.
I strike down my prey like an owl from the sky.
When the sun sets I have no choice but to awaken,
When the moon sets I am never free to have dreams.
Weaponless, I arm myself with the sword of the night.
Defenseless, I give myself armor of shadows.

Once, I might have found peace in an empty sky,
Before I found the comfort that lies in the shadows.
Once, I might have been human in blood,
Before I became a child of the night.
Once, I might have had joy when time to awaken,
Before I came to fear my dreams.

I watch people walking in their waking dreams,
Watch them oblivious to the dangers of the night,
I hear their cries of help ring empty into the sky,
I watch the fear in their faces when forced to awaken.
Yet I give them pity, though I am but a creature of shadows,
And seek to give them sanctuary as I quest for blood.

They fear me, these people, as they fear shadows
Although some lust after me in their dreams.
But they do not know the price to pay for the night,
They do not know what I have given up to take the sky.
They think they want it, but who would want my blood?
I can only hope they forget such foolishness when they awaken.

The time has come for the evil in the city to awaken,
So I begin again my endless search for blood.
Chasing through the rooftops above the peoples' dreams,
Striking when my quarry has reached the safety of the shadows.
Sated, I again leave to run through the sky,
Watch the seconds die that mark my life with the night.

Someday, I hope I can end this maddening hunt for blood in the shadows,
And with it, awaken at last from my tormenting dreams,
But those answers lie in the sky of the day, and I lie here, trapped in the night.
