Barbed wire was invented by Joseph Glidden in 1874 and had a major influence on the development of much of America. Barbed wire fencing made controlled crop farming and cattle ranching feasible, but it was not initially welcomed by the cattle barons. There were wire-cutting wars in Texas and other states, instigated by owners who used the open land as if it were their own. Conversely, some ranchers fenced in great tracts of land that they did not own. Barbed wire was soon put to use in military warfare as an easily deployed barrier in the field, starting with the Spanish-American war and lasting until the beginning of World War II. Today, there is probably more barbed wire on urban fence tops than was laid in the whole era of the wild west.
