The Oracle Bowl of Delphi
Legend contribututed by: Patrick Maloney
Olmec: The ancient kingdom of Lydia was rule by a very rich and very powerful king named Croesus. He had a lot of money, but wasn’t very happy. He thought…. Croesus: If I could conquer Persia, I would be the riches and most powerful man in the world. And that would make me happy. Olmec: But before he attacked the Persians, he decided to ask the fortune-teller at the Temple of Delphi if he was making the right decision. Croesus: Oh great fortune-teller… Olmec: He began, Croesus: If my armies attack Persia, what will happen? Olmec: The fortune-teller sat in a three legged bowl, munching on laurel leaves. She said… Fortune-teller: If King Croesus attacks the Persians, a great empire will be destroyed. Olmec: Croesus went home and promptly attacked Persia. The battle raged for 14 days. But when it was over, Croesus had lost. By attacking the Persians, he had destroyed a great empire…… His own. Years later, the Temple of Delphi was abandoned and everything inside was lost. Your quest is to retrieve the fortune-teller’s three legged bowl from the Temple and bring it back here. Kirk: Thank you, Olmec. So where is the bowl? Olmec: The three legged bowl can be found in The Observatory. |
