Single Minded Water Way

A Contradiction

by

Tenko Fu Shiryo

In a famous interview Siu Long said.

Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

Or in the words of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi.

Real Practice has orientation or direction, but it has no purpose or gaining idea, so it can include everything that comes.

The Zen principle of the Single-Minded Way says.

Even if the sun were to rise from the west the Bodhisattva has only one way.

A contradiction. To be single-minded must be the very opposite of to be like water.

Tell that to the water. Wait for it to change.
