What kind of paint do you use? Acrylic - anything that's on sale - Folk Art, Apple Barrel, Delta Ceramcoat, Deco Art, Americana, etc. - 2 fl. oz. bottles (58 ml). Some people use "Patio Paints" by Deco Art which is formulated especially for outdoors.
What do you use to protect your rocks from the weather? "Krylon" Clear Matte or Crystal Clear Spray Coating Interior/Exterior. "Color Touch" Spray Enamel interior/exterior by Sherwin Williams also works well. I have also used several other brands that are cheaper, but my personal preference is Krylon even if it is more expensive than most of the others - I buy it when it's "on sale". I also recommend that you do not place the rocks where they get direct sunlight all the time and bring them indoors for the winter so the paint does not crack. Each year, I clean the rocks in my "garden" with soap and water, allow them to dry for a couple of days and then re-spray them with the "Krylon" Clear Spray; it makes them look almost like new.
How did you get started painting rocks? I came across Lin Wellford's first book "The Art of Painting Animals on Rocks". She now has four more books published. I would have never ever tried painting were it not for these books. I can't recommend them highly enough. There are also a number of free Clubs on Yahoo! for Rock Painters and you can learn a lot from reading the messages and viewing photos that the members post. The Club I belong to is: Rock Painting . A lot of very talented people are members of this Club and they share marking tips, "how to" tips, new ideas for rocks, etc.
Where can I see Lin's books to see if I might be interested in painting on rocks? Lin has a website at http://www.linwellford.com The on-line Artists Club also has a site. Look for books "by author" at the Artists Club and your search will show all 5 of Lin's books. You can view 10 or 1 pages of each book. Your local library may carry the books.
Do you sell your rocks? No, it's just a hobby with me so far, but if you go to Lin Wellford's site, specifically her "links pages > CLICK HERE < there are many very talented artists listed there and most of them do sell their rocks. You can view rock art on their individual sites. You can also see the painted rocks of these and additional artists at this > ROCK LINK < and the "Other Rock Painters + More" Link at the bottom of this page.
