JACARAIPE, BRAZIL
Name: Hotel Castanheira
Address:
Price: $24
Rating: Mediocre

Review: The hotel room is definitely not worth the price paid for it.
However, adequate hotel conveniently located across from
the bus stop and a block from the beach. Rooms are very
simple, fairly spacious, clean and come with a fan. You
probably pay the high price for the proximity to the beach.
  Still, recommended. Price includes breakfast.

Review: In this chaotic and somewhat dirty city of 164,000, there are
a few hotels in which to choose from. Very good hotel
located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($6 - but
should have been $5 because he had the meter speeded up -
watch out for these unscrupulous cab drivers in this city!)
and a few blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are
spacious, clean and come with a well-stocked frigo bar,
color tv and a fan. This hotel isn’t fancy by any means but
quaint in its own simple and unique way. I guess what
endeared me to this hotel forever is that some of the rooms
(mine included) have a balcony overlooking a peaceful park.
  Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast.

Review: Good and pleasant hotel located a good distance from the
bus terminal (allow at least an hour walking time each way -
or, better yet, take a taxi for $5) and a couple of blocks from
the downtown area. Rooms are spotless, spacious,
  comfortable and come with black and white tv (one channel;
poor reception) and a fan. There are rooms available for $10
a night without the private bathroom and tv. Helpful staff.
  Recommended! Price includes breakfast.

Review: There are several hotels in this city of 25,000 which are,
unfortunately, “dumps”. At any rate, be sure to avoid the

Hotel Central and the Hotel Santa Maria. Both resemble
something that you might find in a “horror” movie. However,
this hotel is excellent and conveniently located just a few
short blocks from the bus terminal and in the immediate
downtown area. Rooms are comfortable, spacious, clean
and come with color tv and a frigo bar. The room is a bit stuffy
without air conditioning or even a fan. However, there are more
luxurious rooms available for $47 that probably
do
include air conditioning. This is part of a small Brazilian
  chain of hotels called
San Juan Hotels with hotels located
  in
Curitiba, Sao Paulo and Foz do Iguacu.
  Recommended! Price includes breakfast.

JAJI, VENEZUELA
Name: Posada de Jaji
Address:
Price: $11
Rating: Honorable Mention

Review: Jaji may very well be one of Venezuela’s best kept secrets.
To get here, you’ll need to take public transportation (van -
$1) from the bus terminal in
Merida. After a magnificent
hour long ride passing spectacular scenery (including
waterfalls and cliffs), you’ll find yourself in this very
picturesque colonial and tourist town of 1,500.
Jaji has
about a half dozen souvenir stores offering an assortment of
handicraft items at extremely inexpensive prices.
Jaji has a
  couple of
posadas and one hospedaje (similar to a posada)
and all offer a great deal in value. The
Posada de Jaji is
extremely quaint and probably the best place to stay in town.
It’s located right in the center of town and directly across
  from the
plaza and a magnificent looking church (bring your
  camera!). This
posada offers small, clean, cozy rooms and
that’s about it. You don’t really need air conditioning because
if you leave the windows open at night you get the cool
mountain air. There is even a working water mountain in the
center of the courtyard. Something that’s a little bit different
is that the rooms, instead of having room numbers on the
outside of the doors, have Spanish names on them. An
excellent value and very friendly hotel staff. Warmly
  recommended!
Drawback: The lock on the door doesn’t work too well.

terminal (25 minute walk), in the downtown area and
peacefully situated next to a river. Rooms are comfortable,
cozy, spotless, fairly spacious and come with color tv, fan
and frigo bar. There are less expensive rooms available
without the color tv and frigo bar but the hotel staff “claimed”
to have been out of those types of rooms at the time of my
visit. However, this hotel is still an excellent value. Highly
  recommended! Price includes poor breakfast.

Review: Judibana is a very peaceful town located just 10 kms. away
  from the city of
Punto Fijo by taxi ($4.50 - cheap!) and
only seems to have one hotel (oh, but what a
gem of a hotel
  it is!). Very good
three star hotel located in the center of
town and near a quiet park. Rooms are spotless, spacious,
comfortable and come with color tv, air conditioning and a
mini refrigerator. Very tastefully decorated. Friendly staff.
English spoken by one person. Warmly recommended!
Drawback: Poor lighting in the room which makes it difficult for reading

Travel Tip: Next to the park from the above mentioned hotel is a
  restaurant worth trying called
Los Cardones. Excellent
food at reasonable prices and English spoken by one waiter.

Review: The best hotel in this city of 25,000 (which isn’t saying much)
located a good walking distance from the bus terminal (allow
40 minutes walking time each way or take a taxi for $5). It’s
also located in the immediate downtown area and across
from a park with easy viewing of a magnificent looking
church. Rooms are somewhat small, fairly clean (carpet
isn’t) and don’t come with anything except a ceiling fan.
Rooms start at $10 with a shared bathroom down the hall
and go up to a whopping $50. Naturally (as is common with
other Brazilian hotels), the more you require for your own
personal comfort, the more the price will increase. A more
spacious room, air conditioning, frigo bar and color tv will
add to the price of the room. This hotel is recommended as
a suitable place to stay while visiting this city. Recommended!
  Price includes breakfast.
