JACARAIPE, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Castanheira Address: Price: $24 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1994 Review: The hotel room is definitely not worth the price paid for it. However, adequate hotel conveniently located across from the bus stop and a block from the beach. Rooms are very simple, fairly spacious, clean and come with a fan. You probably pay the high price for the proximity to the beach. Still, recommended. Price includes breakfast. JACAREI, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Jacarei Palace Address: pca dos Tres Poderes 370 Price: $27 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1998 Review: In this chaotic and somewhat dirty city of 164,000, there are a few hotels in which to choose from. Very good hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($6 - but should have been $5 because he had the meter speeded up - watch out for these unscrupulous cab drivers in this city!) and a few blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are spacious, clean and come with a well-stocked frigo bar, color tv and a fan. This hotel isn’t fancy by any means but quaint in its own simple and unique way. I guess what endeared me to this hotel forever is that some of the rooms (mine included) have a balcony overlooking a peaceful park. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. JACAREZINHO, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Avenida Address: Price: $19 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1996 Review: Good and pleasant hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal (allow at least an hour walking time each way - or, better yet, take a taxi for $5) and a couple of blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are spotless, spacious, comfortable and come with black and white tv (one channel; poor reception) and a fan. There are rooms available for $10 a night without the private bathroom and tv. Helpful staff. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. JACIARA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Kana Brava Address: Price: $25.50 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1995 Review: Good and pleasant hotel (more like a motel) conveniently located a short distance (15 minute walk) from the bus terminal and a few blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are comfortable, spotless, very spacious and come with air conditioning (a welcome relief in this humid city!) and color tv. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. JAGUARIAIVA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel 3 Lebes Address: av. Cde Francisco Mararazzo 460 Price: $42 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1998 Review: There are several hotels in this city of 25,000 which are, unfortunately, “dumps”. At any rate, be sure to avoid the Hotel Central and the Hotel Santa Maria. Both resemble something that you might find in a “horror” movie. However, this hotel is excellent and conveniently located just a few short blocks from the bus terminal and in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are comfortable, spacious, clean and come with color tv and a frigo bar. The room is a bit stuffy without air conditioning or even a fan. However, there are more luxurious rooms available for $47 that probably do include air conditioning. This is part of a small Brazilian chain of hotels called San Juan Hotels with hotels located in Curitiba, Sao Paulo and Foz do Iguacu. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. JAJI, VENEZUELA Name: Posada de Jaji Address: Price: $11 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1997 Review: Jaji may very well be one of Venezuela’s best kept secrets. To get here, you’ll need to take public transportation (van - $1) from the bus terminal in Merida. After a magnificent hour long ride passing spectacular scenery (including waterfalls and cliffs), you’ll find yourself in this very picturesque colonial and tourist town of 1,500. Jaji has about a half dozen souvenir stores offering an assortment of handicraft items at extremely inexpensive prices. Jaji has a couple of posadas and one hospedaje (similar to a posada) and all offer a great deal in value. The Posada de Jaji is extremely quaint and probably the best place to stay in town. It’s located right in the center of town and directly across from the plaza and a magnificent looking church (bring your camera!). This posada offers small, clean, cozy rooms and that’s about it. You don’t really need air conditioning because if you leave the windows open at night you get the cool mountain air. There is even a working water mountain in the center of the courtyard. Something that’s a little bit different is that the rooms, instead of having room numbers on the outside of the doors, have Spanish names on them. An excellent value and very friendly hotel staff. Warmly recommended! Drawback: The lock on the door doesn’t work too well. JALES, BRAZIL Name: Jales Center Hotel Address: av. Francisco Jales 2431 Price: $19 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1999 Review: Very good hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($3 - fair price!) and in the center of the immediate downtown area. Rooms are spotless, fairly spacious and come with color tv with remote control (one English speaking cable channel), air conditioning and a well-stocked frigo bar. Helpful staff. Very much recommended! Price includes breakfast. JANUARIA, BRAZIL Name: Minas Hotel Address: Pca. Patrocinio Mota Price: $15.50 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1995 Review: Good and quaint hotel located several blocks from the bus terminal (25 minute walk), in the downtown area and peacefully situated next to a river. Rooms are comfortable, cozy, spotless, fairly spacious and come with color tv, fan and frigo bar. There are less expensive rooms available without the color tv and frigo bar but the hotel staff “claimed” to have been out of those types of rooms at the time of my visit. However, this hotel is still an excellent value. Highly recommended! Price includes poor breakfast. JARAGUA DO SUL, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Itajara Address: rua Exp. Gumercindo da Silva 237 Price: $35 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1998 Review: Good hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($5 - fair price!) and a couple of blocks from the main shopping street of the downtown area. Rooms are somewhat small, clean and come with color tv and air conditioning. Feeling too cramped? They do have more spacious rooms available for $42. Overall, recommended! Price includes breakfast. JEQUIE, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Iquatemi Address: Price: $6 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1994 Review: This is one of three inexpensive hotels located very near the bus terminal. Adequate hotel located across from the bus terminal and close to the downtown area. Rooms are clean and come with a fan. Very basic but still recommended. Breakfast is roughly $2.38 extra. JOACABA, BRAZIL Name: Lotus Hotel Address: Price: $9.50 Rating: Worst Reviewed: 1995 Review: Cheap and rundown hotel located across the bridge that leads to the bus terminal and a good walk to the downtown area. Rooms are basic, shabby-looking but fairly clean and come with its own bathroom, a small table and a few flies as houseguests. Barely recommended and barely acceptable. Price does not include breakfast. JUDIBANA, VENEZUELA Name: Hotel Luigi Address: Price: $22 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1997 Review: Judibana is a very peaceful town located just 10 kms. away from the city of Punto Fijo by taxi ($4.50 - cheap!) and only seems to have one hotel (oh, but what a gem of a hotel it is!). Very good three star hotel located in the center of town and near a quiet park. Rooms are spotless, spacious, comfortable and come with color tv, air conditioning and a mini refrigerator. Very tastefully decorated. Friendly staff. English spoken by one person. Warmly recommended! Drawback: Poor lighting in the room which makes it difficult for reading of any kind. Travel Tip: Next to the park from the above mentioned hotel is a restaurant worth trying called Los Cardones. Excellent food at reasonable prices and English spoken by one waiter. JUIZ DE FORA, BRAZIL Name: Imperial Hotel Address: Price: $19 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1992 Review: Modest and adequate hotel located in the center of the main shopping street of the downtown area and only a few minutes by taxi ($3 but beware of unscrupulous drivers who overcharge!) from the bus terminal. Rooms are clean, fairly spacious and come with color tv and fan. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. JUJUY, ARGENTINA Name: Hotel Augusta Address: Price: $46 Rating: Best Reviewed: 1991 Review: The best hotel that this city of 182,000 has to offer. Rooms are clean and come with color tv. Highly recommended! JULIO DE CASTILHOS, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Castilhense Address: 15 de Novembro 33 Price: $15 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1998 Review: The best hotel in this city of 25,000 (which isn’t saying much) located a good walking distance from the bus terminal (allow 40 minutes walking time each way or take a taxi for $5). It’s also located in the immediate downtown area and across from a park with easy viewing of a magnificent looking church. Rooms are somewhat small, fairly clean (carpet isn’t) and don’t come with anything except a ceiling fan. Rooms start at $10 with a shared bathroom down the hall and go up to a whopping $50. Naturally (as is common with other Brazilian hotels), the more you require for your own personal comfort, the more the price will increase. A more spacious room, air conditioning, frigo bar and color tv will add to the price of the room. This hotel is recommended as a suitable place to stay while visiting this city. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. JUNDAI, BRAZIL Name: Grande Hotel Address: Price: $25.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1992 Review: Okay hotel (has seen better days!) located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($3) in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are clean and come with color tv but no air conditioning or fan (makes it stuffy!). Limited English spoken. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. Drawback: Noisy traffic at night which makes it difficult to sleep. |
