LA CORONILLA, URUGUAY Name: Hostel Gure-Etxe Address: Price: $34 Rating: Best Reviewed: 1991 Review: Excellent hotel and the best this small resort town has to offer. Rooms are spotless, spacious and a nice touch is that all rooms include a fireplace in them. The son of the owner speaks fluent English. The owner of the hotel is in the process of learning English himself. He’s a Spaniard who takes yearly trips to Spain. The restaurant is excellent and certainly worth trying. Very friendly staff and highly recommended! LA FLORESTA, URUGUAY Name: Hosteria La Floresta Address: Price: $15 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1991 Review: Good, clean and small hotel conveniently located near the bus terminal. Friendly staff. The daughter of the owner speaks English. Highly recommended! LA GRITA, VENEZUELA Name: Hotel Capri Address: Carrera 3 Price: $6.50 Rating: Worst Reviewed: 1997 Review: In this hilly tourist destination (and I use the word loosely), all of the accommodations are on the basic side. Shabby hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($1.50 - reasonable price!) and in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are very basic, dirty and don’t come with anything except some cockroaches to keep you company. In spite of the fact that the hotel is run by some very hospitable people, it still isn’t recommended. Travel Tips: 1) A few blocks up the hill from the above mentioned hotel is a peaceful park where you can sit and people watch. Also, to one side of the park is a magnificent looking church. 2) A block downhill from this hotel is a restaurant called Rancho La Turca which is worth trying. It’s run be a friendly older married couple. Its set course is for around $3 and the food is simple but good. LA PALOMA, URUGUAY Name: Hotel Embeleco Address: Price: $12 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1991 Review: This hotel seems to be the best one in La Paloma which is a tiny town. The hotel is run by a friendly elderly lady who’s hard of hearing. The restaurant is of special note because the ceiling is completely covered with pine cones hanging upside down. Recommended! LA PEDRERA, URUGUAY Name: Hotel Saint Michel Address: Price: $50 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1991 Review: Quaint and friendly small hotel facing the ocean. The hotel is very Spanish looking and the rooms are spacious and clean. The above price includes three meals a day. Recommended! Drawback: Bees. LA PLATA, ARGENTINA Name: Corregidor Hotel Address: Price: $60 Rating: Best Reviewed: 1991 Review: The best hotel that this city of 400,000 has to offer. Excellent four star hotel. Rooms are clean, spacious and come with air conditioning and color tv. Very helpful and friendly staff. Get a room on one of the upper floors with a superb view overlooking the city. The restaurant is worth trying but the service is a bit slow. Highly recommended! LA UNION, CHILE Name: Hotel Turismo Address: Price: $19 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1990 Review: The best hotel that this city has to offer. The rooms are clean and spacious. Friendly and helpful staff. Recommended! LA VICTORIA, VENEZUELA Name: Hotel Onix Address: Price: $39 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1997 Review: The best hotel in this surprisingly quiet city of 105,000. Excellent three star hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($2.50 - good price!) and a few short blocks to the downtown area. Rooms are spotless, spacious, comfortable and come with color tv and air conditioning. Also, a very spacious bathroom. Amenities include a swimming pool. I was fortunate enough to get a room on one of the upper floors with an aerial view of the mountains that surround the city. Attentive hotel staff. Highly recommended! LAGES, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Rodolar Address: Price: $9.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1995 Review: One of several cheap hotels located around the bus terminal area and this is one of them. Adequate and acceptable hotel located directly across from the bus terminal and a good distance from the downtown area. Appearances can be deceiving! On the outside, the hotel looks rundown. On the inside, however, rooms are basic, clean, somewhat small and come with a small sink and that’s about it. The bathroom is right down the hall. For just $2.50 more per night will get you a private bathroom. Can be recommended for an overnight stay. Price includes breakfast. Drawback: Be very wary of a door knob that may come loose and fall off the door, leaving you locked and trapped until you can bang on the door for help to arrive. LAGOA VERMELHA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Oro Address: av. Afonso Pena 296 Price: $21 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1998 Review: Good but modest hotel located a few short blocks from the bus terminal and on the main street of the downtown area. Rooms are spotless, adequately sized, comfortable and come with color tv. They have many prices to suit most pocketbooks including: $14 - Just a room with the bathroom down the hall. $15 - Just a room with tv and the bathroom down the hall. $21 - A room with a private bathroom and color tv. $28 - Similar to the $21 room but more spacious and also air conditioning is included. $44 - A suite. $49 - An extra large suite. Friendly staff. Very much recommended! Price includes breakfast. LAGUNILLAS, VENEZUELA Name: Hotel Lagunillas Address: Price: $67.50 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1997 Review: Very good three star hotel located a few short miles south of Ciudad Ojeda by por puesto (shared taxis that run along a fixed route - $0.38 - cheap!) and sits alongside a highway. The hotel is located a good distance from the downtown area. Rooms are spotless, extremely spacious, comfortable and come with color tv (only one channel) and air conditioning. The best and only hotel in the city. Highly recommended! LAJEADO, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Dahlen Address: Price: $11 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1993 Review: Reasonably priced hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($4) and right on the main street (tends to be noisy at night due to traffic) of the downtown area. Rooms are simple, fairly clean (although could be dusted a bit more) and come with a fan. Besides Portuguese, German is also spoken. Recommended. Price includes breakfast. LAMBARI, BRAZIL Name: Grande Hotel Bibano Address: Price: $10 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1992 Review: Adequate hotel located near the bus terminal by taxi ($2) and two blocks from the center of town. Rooms are basic but fairly clean. Price includes a cheap bottle of carbonated mineral water and a disappointing breakfast. Friendly staff. Recommended. Drawback: Watch out for spiders and a roof that leaks. LAPA. BRAZIL Name: Hotel Turislapa Address: rua Westphalen 302 Price: $15 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1995 Review: Adequate hotel located a short distance (an easy walk) from the bus terminal and the downtown area. Rooms are clean, somewhat small but yet cozy. No heat in the room but a nice assortment of blankets for those chilly nights. A little noisy since the tv is in the tiny lobby located directly outside of the rooms but still recommended. Price includes breakfast. LARANJEIRAS DO SUL, BRAZIL Name: Lipski Hotel Address: Price: $17 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1996 Review: Good and adequate hotel conveniently located directly across the street from the bus terminal and quite a few blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are clean, comfortable and come with color tv and a fan. Recommended. Price includes breakfast. Advisary: Be especially cautious when staying in this city since it’s poorer than you might find elsewhere in the state of Parana. While the above hotel is certainly recommended as being suitable, it’s not in the best area since it’s near the bus terminal which is rather delapidated and run-down. Be aware of your surroundings at all times and it might be best not to go out at night. LAS CRUCES, CHILE Name: La Araucana (Cabanas) Address: Price: $11.50 Rating: Best Value Reviewed: 1990 Review: Without a doubt, this is the best place to stay in this tiny town located on the coast of the country. The cabins are very tastefully decorated and modern. My cabin was the only one that included color tv. The price includes three ample meals a day. The entire staff is extremely friendly and the owner speaks fluent English. Highly recommended! LAS VENTANAS, CHILE Name: Motel-Hotel Los Leones Address: Price: $5 Rating: Worst Reviewed: 1990 Review: The hotel was almost completely empty at the time of my visit. The room was dirty (looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in a long time) and fairly spacious. Not recommended. LEOPOLDINA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Alvorada Address: rua Pres. Carlos Luiz Price: $17.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1994 Review: Good two star hotel located a block from the bus terminal and a short distance from the downtown area. Rooms are clean, fairly spacious and come with color tv and a fan. There are less expensive rooms available without a private bathroom. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. LIMEIRA, BRAZIL Name: Grande Hotel Address: Price: $18.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1993 Review: Average hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($3.50) and within a couple of blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are fairly spacious and come with color tv and a fan. Not the friendliest hotel staff, that’s for sure. Barely recommended. Price includes breakfast. Drawback: The tv didn’t work properly and the dirty and ugly pink walls were difficult to look at. LLIFEN, CHILE Name: Hosteria Villa La Cascada Address: Price: $51.50 Rating: Best Reviewed: 1990 Review: Excellent and quaint cabins with beautiful surrounding. Rooms are clean, spacious and tastefully decorated. Three meals a day included in the price of the room. Friendly owners. Highly recommended! LLOLLEO, CHILE Name: Hotel Alhambra Address: Price: $12.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1990 Review: Basic hotel and certainly “nothing to write home about”. Barely recommended. LONCOCHE, CHILE Name: Hotel Aleman Address: Price: $11.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1990 Review: Basic hotel with the rooms being dark and gloomy. Not worth the price I paid for it. Barely recommended! LONDRINA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Alves Address: Price: $7 Rating: Best Value Reviewed: 1993 Review: Good hotel (recommended by a cab driver) located a short distance from the bus terminal and right in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are basic (not too bad), clean, spacious and come with a fan and sink. The bathroom is located down the hall. Good value. Recommended! Breakfast is roughly $2 extra. LORENA, BRAZIL Name: Olympia Hotel Address: rua Maj. Joaquim Luiz Bastos Price: 1998: $50 1999: $28 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1998: Good hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($5 - fair price!) and a few blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are clean, spacious and come with color tv and air conditioning. Normal prices for a standard room is $60 but they were having some kind of a special. There are also luxurious types of rooms available for $78, and even more luxurious rooms available for $86. I expected a little nicer room for the price that I paid for it. Most rooms (mine included) have a balcony. However, since I was only on the second floor, the view wasn’t the greatest. I suspect that the more one pays for a room, the better the view is. Helpful staff. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. 1999: Good hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($3 - fair price!) and a few blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are adequately sized, clean and come with color tv and air conditioning. Also, a balcony (even though small) is a nice touch. Amenities include a fitness center. Helpful staff. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. LOS MOLLES, CHILE Name: Cabanas Lourdes Address: Price: $10 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1990 Review: Los Molles is a tinny town located on the coast of the country. The cabins are clean and spacious. Friendly owners. Excellent value. Highly recommended! LOS TEQUES, VENEZUELA Name: Hotel Gran Casino Address: Carabobo y Boyaca Price: $21.50 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1997 Review: Good three star hotel located just a couple of blocks from the immediate downtown area and from where the small and rickety old buses depart for and arrive from Caracas. This is, without a doubt, the best hotel this chaotic and confusing city of 164,000 has to offer. Rooms are fairly spacious, spotless and come with color tv (sensitive) and a king size bed. Nice touches include piped in music and a huge mirror on the wall. I was fortunate enough to be on the 7th floor with an aerial view of the city spread out beneath me. Breathtaking! The hotel also has a restaurant and bar with live music in the evening. Some English spoken. The hotel can definitely be recommended but the city can’t. Drawback: Being a three star hotel, one would expect there would be air conditioning in the room but there wasn’t. Advisary: A few blocks from the above mentioned hotel are four seedy-looking hotels that are right beside one another that are best to be avoided. The Hotel Gran Casino is the only decent place to stay in the city. |
