PALMEIRA DAS MISSOES, BRAZIL Name: Hotel do Commercio Address: Price: $9 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1996 Review: Adequate hotel located several blocks from the bus terminal (allow at least 30 minutes walking time each way), one block from the downtown area and across the street from a small park. Rooms are basic, spotless, small and come with a sink. The bathroom is located down the hall. Not too bad of a choice for a budget hotel. Can be recommended for an overnight stay. Price does not include breakfast. Travel Tip: A few blocks from the above mentioned hotel is a hotel called Hotel Vila Velha which is also a budget hotel and might be a better place to stay at than this one. Advisary: Most Brazilian parks are well lit at night. Unfortunately, the one across the street is not so be especially careful at night. PALMITOS, BRAZIL Name: Belem Hotel Address: Price: $9 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1996 Review: Adequate hotel located a few blocks from the bus terminal and in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are basic, fairly clean (curtains are shabby, though) and don’t come with anything except a private bathroom. Can be recommended! Price does not include breakfast. Drawback: Cobwebs in the bathroom. PANAMBI, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Oasis Address: Price: $18 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1998 Review: The only hotel I could find (with the help of the locals) in this peaceful city of 29,000. Good hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal and in the immediate downtown area. It’s also situated across from a picturesque park. Rooms are extremely spacious, spotless and come with color tv and a fan. Some rooms (mine included) face the park. It seems to be a Christian hotel since they have bible verses (in Portuguese, of course) located throughout the hotel. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. PARA DE MINAS, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Elite Address: Praca Francisco Torqualo 76 Price: $6.50 Rating: Best Value Reviewed: 1995 Review: This hotel has probably seen better days. However, adequate hotel conveniently located a couple of blocks from the bus terminal and a few short blocks to the downtown area. Rooms are basic, spotless and don’t come with really anything. The bathroom is located down the hall. Recommended especially for being a good budget choice. Price includes breakfast. Drawback: The room numbers are written on the keys. Unfortunately, some of the doors of the rooms don’t have room numbers on them. PARACATU, BRAZIL Name: Luana Hotel Address: av. Dep. Quintino Vargas 349 Price: $27 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1995 Review: Good and pleasant hotel located several blocks from the bus terminal (25 minute walk) and right in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are comfortable, clean and come with a well-stocked frigo bar, fan and color tv with remote control. In addition, most rooms located on the second floor (mine included) have the added advantage of having a balcony overlooking the main shopping street of this bustling city of 63,000. Hotel particularly popular with young people. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. PARATI, BRAZIL Name: Pousada Porto Parati Address: Price: $62 Rating: Best Reviewed: 1992 Review: In this charming colonial town of 26,000, there are several excellent hotels to choose from. This excellent and quaint hotel (it’s really a pousada) is attractively housed in a colonial building and located on the main shopping street and within walking distance from the bus terminal (if you have luggage, take a taxi because of the cobblestone streets). Rooms are spotless and come with air conditioning. Service is superb. English spoken by one person. Good and reasonably priced laundry service done within the same day. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. PARRAL, CHILE Name: Hotel Brescia Address: Price: $12.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1990 Review: Very basic and simple hotel located within walking distance from the bus terminal. Recommended! PASSA QUATRO, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Recanto das Hortensias Address: rua Cel Arthur Tiburcio 10 Price: $100 Rating: Best Reviewed: 1996 Review: Very nice, indeed! Truly a world class hotel! Certainly one of the most impressive and luxurious hotels that I’ve had the pleasure of staying at. Excellent hotel located a few blocks from both the bus terminal and the center of town by taxi ($5). Rooms are spotless, extremely spacious and come with color tv and a well-stocked frigo bar. Most rooms (mine included) have a balcony with a view of either the countryside or a partial view of the countryside. Breathtaking! The price (admittedly steep) includes (besides the usual Brazilian breakfast, of course) lunch and dinner which consists of an excellent hot and cold buffet. The grounds that the hotel sits on is very sprawling and well kept. Amenities include a swimming pool, tennis court, volleyball court and grounds for playing soccer. Also, there’s a lovely terrace in front to sit and people watch. In addition, there’s a huge swimming pond in back. An extremely safe hotel as you can tell by the uniformed security guard stationed at the front gate. Obviously, the well to do people (the Brazilian elite) stay here. Some English spoken. Excellent service. Friendly staff. Highly recommended. Added Bonus: Since the hotel rented out their dining room for a wedding reception Saturday evening, hotel guests had a special treat in store for them. They held a barbeque in the hotel’s pavilion with live music. A very nice touch, indeed! Drawback: For being an upscale hotel, I was surprised and disappointed that they didn’t offer to give me a lift to the bus terminal in their courtesy van. PASSO FUNDO, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Turis Address: Price: $19 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1993 Review: Very good two star hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($5) and right in the heart of the downtown area and directly across from a park. Rooms are spotless and come with air conditioning. More expensive rooms also include a tv. Be sure to request a room on one of the top floors for a breathtaking view of the city. The hotel has a short turn-around time to have laundry cleaned at reasonable prices. The hotel also offers a scrumptious lunch buffet from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. but be sure to arrive early as the buffet is very popular and seating is limited. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. PATO BRANCO, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Loriza Address: rua Iguacu 970 Price: $36.50 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1996 Review: Good two star hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($5), a few short blocks from the downtown area and in a good and quiet residential area. Rooms are comfortable and come with a well-stocked frigo bar and color tv (several channels) with remote control. One of the two best hotels in this city of 56,000 (the other is the Grande Hotel). Very much recommended. Price includes breakfast. PATOS DE MINAS, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Veneza Address: Price: $10.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1995 Review: There is certainly no shortage of hotels in this city of 103,000. Plenty of adequate and inexpensive hotels within walking distance from the bus terminal and this is one of them. Good and modest hotel conveniently located directly across from the bus terminal and several blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are comfortable, small, spotless and don’t come with anything (even though the price paid was for a room with a fan). However, still very much recommended. Price includes breakfast. Drawbacks: 1) No toilet seat on the toilet in the bathroom. 2) The door to room sticks. 3) Several of the room numbers on the doors aren’t in numeric order so you may be wandering around trying to find your room. PATROCINIO, BRAZIL Name: Patrocinio Hotel Address: Price: $10.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1995 Review: Adequate hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal (at least a 25 minute walk) and in the immediate downtown area. Price includes breakfast. PELLUHUE, CHILE Name: Nueva Residencial La Playa Address: Price: $4 Rating: Worst Reviewed: 1990 Review: Pelluhue is an extremely poor town located on the coast of Chile with no decent accommodations and restaurants of any kind. Extremely basic and shabby residencial. Definitely not recommended. PELOTAS, BRAZIL Name: Grande Hotel Address: Price: $7 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1992 Review: The Grande Hotel has probably seen better days (maybe). Very basic, drab and old hotel located in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are clean, fairly spacious and don’t come with really anything. Some rooms (mine included) have a balcony overlooking a park. Friendly staff. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. PENEDO, BRAZIL Name: Unmarked hotel Address: Price: $12 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1994 Review: Very basic hotel located within walking distance from the bus terminal and the center of town. The hotel is unmarked with no visible signs but the locals know where to find it. Rooms are basic, small, fairly clean and come with a small fan. Barely recommended. Price includes breakfast. Drawback: Spiders. PENHA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Lorimar Address: Price: $9 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1993 Review: Adequate hotel located 6 kms. from the downtown area and in the Praia da Armacao area. Actually, it’s located approximately six blocks from the beach area. Rooms are basic, clean and come with black and white tv and a fan (still don’t help much in warm weather). Also, the room includes a gadget that you plug into the wall at night that is supposed to alleviate the problem of mosquitoes. Friendly and helpful staff. Recommended for an overnight stay. Price includes breakfast. PETROPOLIS, BRAZIL Name: York Hotel Address: Price: $29 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1992 Review: Adequate hotel located within walking distance from the bus terminal and the shopping area. PICHILEMU, CHILE Name: Hotel Rex Address: Price: $12 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1990 Review: Pichilemu is a charming town which uses horse and buggy as the primary means of transportation instead of taxis. The best hotel in town. Rooms are basic, spotless and fairly spacious and don’t come with really anything. Friendly and helpful staff. The hotel has a restaurant worth trying. Recommended!
