REGISTRO, BRAZIL Name: Lito Palace Hotel Address: Price: $13.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1992 Review: Good and moderately priced two star hotel located in the center of town and within a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($2.50). Rooms are comfortable, clean and come with color tv, frigo bar and air conditioning. Helpful and friendly staff. Recommended! RESENDE, BRAZIL Name: Castel Palace Hotel Address: av. Maj. Castelo Branco 301 Price: 1998: $72 1999: $42 Rating: Best Reviewed: There are several choices of good hotels to stay in this city of 94,000 and this is one of them. 1998: Excellent hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($5 - honest price!) and a few short blocks to the downtown area. The room was more like a suite and was extremely spacious. There’s the sleeping quarters with a large king size bed (bed spread matches the drapes) and color tv. There’s a beautiful painting of flowers that hangs above the bed. There’s the living room area with a table, two comfortable chairs and a frigo bar. The bathroom is especially spacious. Rooms are comfortable and also come with air conditioning. Helpful staff and English is sporadically spoken. Highly and enthusiastically recommended. Price includes breakfast. 1999: The review is very similar to the one that I made in 1998. Again, the room resembles more of a suite and is extremely comfortable, extremely spacious and comes with color tv, air conditioning, frigo bar and is tastefully decorated. Highly and enthusiastically recommended. Price includes breakfast. RESISTENCIA, ARGENTINA Name: Holon Colon Address: Price: $29 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1991 Review: Adequate hotel located near the bus terminal. Rooms are clean and fairly spacious. Recommended! RIBAS DO RIO PARDO, BRAZIL Name: Thalis Hotel Price: $28 Address: av. Aureliano Moura Brandao Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1995 Review: Very pleasant hotel (probably the best that this city of 13,000 has to offer) in this rather poor and desolate town that has seen better days. The hotel is located a good walk (maybe 25 minutes) from where the bus stops at a restaurant alongside of a highway and in the center of the downtown (what very little downtown there is) area. Rooms are spotless, comfortable, fairly spacious and come with air conditioning (a welcome relief!) and a well-stocked frigo bar. A nice touch is half of the walls in the room is done in pink and the other half is done in blue. Helpful staff (someone will drive you to the bus terminal). Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. RIBEIRAO PRETO, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Vila Real Address: Price: $61 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1993 Review: In this sophisicated city of 431,000, there are hotel choices in all price ranges. Good three star hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($4) and right in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are clean, rather plain looking and come with color tv, air conditioning and a frigo bar. Try requesting a room on one of the upper floors for a superb view of the city. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. Travel Tip: If you feel the need for a very big splurge, you might try the four star Stream Palace Hotel located just five blocks away from this one. They charge a whopping $140 for a room. RIO BUENO, CHILE Name: Hotel Richmond Address: Price: $6.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1990 Review: Adequate hotel located within walking distance from the bus terminal. Rooms are small, basic and clean. The staff was not particularly friendly. Still, this hotel is recommended as being a good budget choice. RIO CLARO, BRAZIL Name: Lider Hotel Address: Price: $28 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1993 Review: Good hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($7), right in the immediate downtown area and across the street from a park. Rooms are spotless, spacious and come with color tv with remote control and a frigo bar. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. Drawback: The toilet didn’t flush properly. RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL Name: Trocadero Othon Hotel Address: av. Atlantica 2064 Price: 1992: $75 1993: $95 1994: $52 1995: $69 1996: $73 1998: $70 1999: $60 Rating: Best Reviewed: 1992: Excellent three star hotel located within the Copacabana Beach area. Rooms are clean, comfortable and come with air conditioning, color tv and a frigo bar. I was fortunate enough to get a room facing the beach. Friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. Advisary: Taxi cab drivers in this city are notorious for overcharging the unsuspecting tourist. It is best to go to one of the taxi cab booths located in the bus terminal. The fixed price (depending on the location) is a little bit higher but it’s a lot less hassle in the long run. 1993: Excellent three star hotel located within the Copacabana Beach area. Again (as with the previous year), rooms are clean, comfortable and come with air conditioning, color tv and a frigo bar. I was fortunate enough to get a room facing the beach. Friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended. Price includes breakfast. 1994: Excellent three star hotel located within the Copacabana Beach area. Again (as with the previous years), rooms are clean, comfortable and come with air conditioning, color tv and a frigo bar. The above price was for a partial view of the beach. Friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. 1995: Excellent three star hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($14) and located right in the Copacabana Beach area. Again (as with the previous years), rooms are clean, comfortable and come with air conditioning, color tv and a frigo bar. My room was especially spacious this year. I was fortunate enough to get a room facing the beach. Helpful and friendly staff. Price includes breakfast. 1996: Excellent three star hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($20 - Radio Taxi - good service) and within the Copacabana area and right across from the beach. Rooms are fairly spacious, clean, comfortable and come with color tv (including HBO), air conditioning and a well-stocked frigo bar. Some rooms (mine included) overlook the beach. Good service by a helpful staff. Not quite as good of service as last year, though. Still, highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. 1998: Excellent three star hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($20) and within the Copacabana area and right across from the beach. Rooms are fairly spacious, comfortable, clean and come with color tv (good cable), air conditioning and a well-stocked frigo bar. I was fortunate enough to get a room on the 11th floor with a superb view of the beach. Service is excellent with an especially friendly desk clerk. Also, friendly housekeeping maids. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. Footnote: This year, the Trocadero Othon Hotel has updated itself. In previous years, the elevators were wooden and rather old fashioned which added a certain charm. However, this year a digital elevator was installed in an effort to make the hotel more modern. 1999: Excellent three star hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($10 - excellent price due to the favorable exchange rate this year), within the Copacabana area and right across from the beach. Rooms are fairly spacious, comfortable, clean and come with color tv (good cable including HBO and CNN International), air conditioning and a well-stocked frigo bar. I was fortunate enough to be on the 11th floor with a superb view of the beach. Friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended! This year, breakfast was an additional $3. RIO DO SUL, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Riosulense Address: av. Aristiliano Ramos 384 Price: $13 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1995 Review: Adequate hotel conveniently located directly across from the bus terminal and within walking distance from the downtown area. Rooms are basic, fairly clean and come with black and white tv, frigo bar and air conditioning. Despite the numerous cigarette burns on the carpet and a couple of small bugs and insects on the walls, this hotel is still recommended. Price includes above average breakfast. RIO GRANDE, BRAZIL Name: City Hotel Address: Price: $2.50 Rating: Worst Reviewed: 1992 Review: Extremely basic and rundown hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi. Rooms are dirty and have a foul ordor to them.. Also, you might see one or two small lizards scaling the walls. Definitely not recommended. RIO NEGRINHO, BRAZIL Name: Pousada Joao de Barra Address: Price: $35 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1998 Review: Very good hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($5) and isn’t really near the downtown area. Rooms are fairly spacious, clean and come with color tv. While the rooms are on the plain side, the hotel more than makes up for it in the peaceful location. It overlooks the city with a breathtaking view. Prices start at $35 for a standard room and other types of rooms available going all of the way up to a whopping $86. Good but pricey restaurant (open for dinnner only). Helpful staff and English spoken only by the female desk clerk. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. RIO NEGRO, BRAZIL Name: Rio Negro Hotel Address: rua 15 de Novembro 40 Price: $14.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1995 Review: Adequate hotel (has probably seen better days) located a short distance from the Mafra bus terminal and in the center of town. Rooms are spacious, spotless and come with a sink. The communal bathroom is located down the hall. There are more expensive rooms available that come with a private bathroom. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. Travel Tip: When coming to this city, take the bus to Mafra. Then walk the short distance across the bridge to Rio Negro. The reason for this is that the bus terminal in Rio Negro is a good distance from the downtown area. Drawback: Luckily, my room had two beds in it. The bed I was sleeping on completely broke down so that a large section of the mattress ended up on the floor. RIO PARDO, BRAZIL Name: Centuri Hotel Address: rua Alm. Alexandrino de Alecar Price: $19 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1996 Review: Rio Pardo is a rather old and delapidated-looking city of 43, 000 with few hotel choices of any kind. Adequate hotel located a few blocks from the rundown bus terminal and in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are simple, fairly clean (carpet could use some more vacumning), extremely spacious and come with air conditioning (much needed!). Recommended! Price includes breakfast. Drawbacks: 1) The toilet didn’t flush properly in the bathroom. 2) During the night, the air conditioning stopped working properly. Instead of cooling off the room, the air conditionioner blew in warm air. RIO VERDE DE MATO GROSSO, BRAZIL Name: Quedas Palace Hotel Address: av. Eurico Sebastiao Ferreira Price: $11.50 Rating: Best Value Reviewed: 1995 Review: Good and pleasant hotel conveniently located across the highway from the bus terminal and a few blocks from the center of town. Rooms are comfortable, spotless, fairly spacious and come with a fan. For $3.50 more per night will get you a room with air conditioning. An exceptional value since the rooms are quite good for the price. A nice touch is the comfortable chairs in front of the hotel to sit and people watch. Friendly staff. Warmly recommended! Price includes breakfast. ROLANDIA, BRAZIL Name: Mirage Palace Hotel Address: Manuel Carreira Bernardino 824 Price: $23 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1996 Review: Good and modest three star hotel located a few blocks from the bus terminal and one block from the immediate downtown area. Rooms are spotless, comfortable, fairly spacious and come with color tv and a well-stocked frigo bar. Rooms with air conditioning are $31.50 a night and suites are $52.50 a night. Friendly but slightly confused hotel staff. The best (and probably only) hotel in this friendly city of 44,000. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. Drawback: The key to your room may not be on any kind of a keyring which makes misplacing it more likely. Also, make a mental note of your room number since it’s not printed anywhere on the key. RONDONOPOLIS, BRAZIL Name: Palace Hotel Address: rua Fernando C. de Costa 625 Price: $18 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1995 Review: Adequate hotel conveniently located a couple of blocks from the bus terminal and in the downtown area. Rooms are small, spotless and come with a fan. There are more expensive rooms available that come with air conditioning and color tv. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. Drawbacks: 1) The bathroom is tiny and cramped. 2) I saw an enormous cockroach skittering across the floor. ROSARIO DO SUL, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Areias Brancas Address: rua Voluntarios da Patria 2611 Price: $19 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1996 Review: Very good hotel conveniently located directly across from the bus terminal and a good distance from the downtown area by local bus ($0.35 each way). Rooms are spotless, comfortable and come with color tv with remote control and a ceiling fan. Friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. ROSARIO, ARGENTINA Name: Hotel La Paz Address: Price: $20 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1991 Review: Modest hotel located near the bus terminal. Rooms are basic and don’t come with really anything except a ceiling fan (still hot, though). Recommended! ROSARIO, VENEZUELA Name: Hotel El Rosario Address: Price: $11 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1997 Review: There are four basic hotels in this rather ordinary city and this is one of them. Barely adequate hotel located right at the bus stop and a good distance from the downtown area (allow at least 45 minutes walking time each way). Rooms are simple, spotless, spacious and come with air conditioning and that’s about it. Friendly staff. Can be recommended for an overnight stay. Drawbacks: 1) Smells of bug spray. 2) Spiders in the bathroom. 3) Lock on the door doesn’t work (prop a chair up against the door at night for added security). |

QUIBOR, VENEZUELA Name: Hotel Gran Duque Address: Price: $10.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1997 Review: Adequate hotel located a good distance from where the buses stop and from the downtown area by por puesto (shared van - $0.13 - cheap!). This hotel seems to be the only one in this city of 53, 525. Rooms are basic, fairly spacious, fairly clean and come with air conditioning and a balcony overlooking just a street. If you can settle for a room without air conditioning, the price drops to only $8 per night. Piped-in music of loud rock and roll (thank goodness there’s an “off” switch!). Recommended! QUINTERO, CHILE Name: Hotel Yachting Club Address: Price: $16 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1990 Review: A beautiful hotel located on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Rooms are spotless, spacious and very comfortable. The food served in the dining room is excellent. Friendly staff. Recommended! Drawback: Lunch or dinner is included in the price of the room. I ate both meals there. I was charged for both of the meals when one of them should have been free. When I brought it to the hotels attention upon checking out, he deducted only $0.50 from the bill. |
