TALTAL, CHILE Name: Hosteria Taltal Address: Price: $42 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1990 Review: Adequate hotel located within walking distance from the bus terminal and facing the ocean. The best hotel in this small city which is not saying much. My room was not especially clean. However, it’s still recommended. TANDIL, ARGENTINA Name: Plaza Hotel Address: Price: $29 Rating: Best Reviewed: 1991 Review: Excellent hotel and probably the best in the city conveniently located within walking distance from the bus terminal. I was fortunate to get a room on one of the upper floors with a superb view of the Plaza. Friendly and helpful staff even though no English is spoken. Highly recommended! TAPES, BRAZIL Name: Balneario Bebello Hotel Address: Price: $20 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1993 Review: Simple and friendly hotel in this friendly and peaceful town located only a short drive from Porto Alegre. Rooms are adequately sized, basic but clean. There are more expensive rooms available overlooking the ocean. Helpful staff since one of them drove me to the bus terminal in order to catch a bus to a neighboring city. Drawback: The electricity is not always turned on. Therefore, it may be wise to bring a flashlight with you. TAQUARA, BRAZIL Name: Candemil Executivo Hotel Address: rua Guilherme Lahn 1175 Price: $37 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1996 Review: The best hotel that this lively city of 42,000 has to offer. Very good four star hotel located approximately four blocks from the bus terminal and a block from the immediate downtown area. Rooms are spotless, comfortable, spacious and come with color tv, fan and a clock radio for those early wake-up calls. For $56 a night will get you a room that also includes air conditioning and a frigo bar. Very much recommended! Price includes breakfast. Drawback: I saw an enormous cockroach in my room. Travel Tip: You can purchase a liter of non carbonated mineral water at the bus terminal for just $.63 which is an excellent price. TATUI, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Del Fiol Address: pca. da Martiz 26 Price: $35 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1998 Review: Good two star hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($6 - too high!), across from a park and in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are of an adequate size, cozy, spotless and come with color tv, a well-stocked frigo bar and a ceiling fan. More luxurious rooms with air conditioning are available for $45. Helpful staff. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. Drawback: My room smelled of disinfectant. TAUBATE, BRAZIL Name: Barrao Palace Hotel Address: Price: $11.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1992 Review: Decent hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($3.50) and in the center of town. Rooms are comfortable, clean, spacious and most have a balcony overlooking a park across the street. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. Drawback: Ants! TEIXEIRA DE FREITAS, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Central Address: Price: $9.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1994 Review: Adequate hotel located very near the bus terminal and in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are basic (as are the other hotels in the city), fairly clean and come with a fan. The communal bathroom is located just down the hall. Can be recommended for a short stay. Price includes breakfast. TELEMACO BORBA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Dal Col Address: Price: $8.50 Rating: Best Value Reviewed: 1999 Review: In this bustling city of 57,000, there are a few hotel choices for the budget traveler and this is one of them. Adequate hotel conveniently located a couple of blocks from the bus terminal and on the edge of the main shopping street of the downtown area. Rooms are simple, spotless (except under the bed), adequately sized and come with color tv with remote control and a fan. There are rooms available for a mere $5 with the communal bathroom located down the hall. Helpful staff. Popular. Very much recommended! Price includes breakfast. TEMUCO, CHILE Name: Hosteria de la Frontera Address: Price: $70.50 Rating: Best Reviewed: 1990 Review: Excellent hotel and the best that this city has to offer located a short taxi ride from the bus terminal. Rooms are spacious, spotless and come with color tv. Good but pricey restaurant. Amenities include a large indoor swimming pool. Expensive but reliable laundry service. Helpful and friendly staff. Highly recommended! TERESOPOLIS, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Monrepos Address: Price: $42 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1992 Review: Very good hotel located a short taxi ride from the bus terminal and on top of a steep hill overlooking the city. Rooms are spotless, spacious and come with color tv and a frigo bar. Friendly and helpful staff with some English spoken. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. Travel Tip: If you’re in the mood for Italian food, you might want to consider trying the Dom Vito restaurant. They specialize in a wide variety of Italian food at affordable prices. During my visit there, I started out with a mixed salad which included lettuce, tomatoes, onions, peas, green olives and artichokes. The spaghetti I chose was unusual in that it was strawberry flavored with grated cheese lighly sprinkled over the top. The price which included the salad, entree, 2 soft drinks came to just $6. Highly recommended! TERMAS DO GRAVATAL, BRAZIL Name: Hotel do Lago Address: Price: $18 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1993 Review: Excellent hotel located in this small spa town. Rooms are clean, fairly spacious and come with color tv, air conditioning and a balcony overlooking a spacious swimming pool and a lake (not the cleanest). Friendly and helpful staff. The proprietor offered to drive me the next morning to the city of Tubarao (23 kms. away) so that I could get a bus to another town on my journey. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. Drawback: 1) Coming from Tubarao, the bus will drop you off at the side of a highway where there’s a fruit stand and a supermercado across the way. Taxi service is extremely limited in this small town so you’ll have to communicate with someone to call you a cab. This will take repeated effort on their part since the cab company doesn’t always answer their phones. 2) The shower in the bathroom is difficult to regulate because the hot and cold comes out in extremes instead of even temperatures. TIETE, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Cuitelo Address: pca. Elias Garcia 41 Price: $29.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1996 Review: Adequate hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($5 - fair price!) and in the immediate downtown area and across from a lovely park. The above mentioned price is for a room with a sink and a fan but without a private bathroom. Rooms with a private bathroom, fan and black and white tv are $40. Rooms with your own private bathroom, air conditioning and color tv are a whopping $50.50. I was shown these higher priced rooms but declined because they were, in my opinion, vastly overpriced for what you actually get. However, since it seems to be the only hotel in this city of 25,000, you won’t have any choice but to stay here. Eagar and helpful staff. All in all, still recommended! Price includes breakfast. TIMBO, BRAZIL Name: Parque Hotel Timbo Address: rua Blumenau 141 Price: $35 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1998 Review: Very nice, indeed! Very good hotel located just a few blocks from the bus terminal and several blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are extremely spacious (even with 4 single beds in them with plenty of space left over), spotless, comfortable and come with color tv. air conditioning and a frigo bar (empty). Amenities include a good sized swimming pool. The above price was for a standard type of room. For $11 more will get you a more luxurious type of room which also include your own balcony. The hotel is situated on picturesque and well-maintained grounds. Helpful and friendly staff. English spoken by the female desk clerk. The male desk clerk is so friendly, in fact, that he couldn’t stop smiling! Highly recommended! Price includes above average breakfast. TIRADENTES, BRAZIL Name: Pousada Porao Colonial Address: Price: $7 Rating: Best Value Reviewed: 1992 Review: Tiradentes is a charming and peaceful colonial town of 8,500 with various accommodations in all price ranges. Pousada Porao Colonial is noted for its’ exceptional value in being extremely affordable. All rooms are spacious, spotless and come with black and white tv. Friendly staff. Price includes breakfast. Highly recommended! TOCOPILLA, CHILE Name: unknown Address: Price: $20 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1990 Review: Good hotel located very near the bus terminal. Rooms are spotless, spacious and comfortable. Recommended! TOLEDO, BRAZIL Name: unknown Address: Price: $6.50 Rating: Worst Reviewed: 1996 Review: Shabby hotel conveniently located across the street from the bus terminal and several blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are very basic, small and don’t come with anything except a rock hard bed. Also, plenty of flies to keep you company. Not recommended in the least! Price does not include breakfast. TOLEDO, BRAZIL Name: Monte Sion Hotel Address: av. Tiradentes 138 Price: $21 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1996 Review: Good hotel located several blocks from the bus terminal by taxi ($5 - too high!) and in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are spotless, comfortable and come with air conditioning and color tv. The bathroom is especially spacious and tastefully decorated. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. TONGOY, CHILE Name: Hotel Yachting Club Address: Price: $19 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1990 Review: Good hotel located right across from the beach. Rooms are clean, adequate but basic. Recommended! TOVAR, VENEZUELA Name: Hosteria Sabaneta Address: avenida 3 Bis Price: $11 Rating: Best Value Reviewed: 1997 Review: Good and adequate hotel and the best this city of 30,000 has to offer (which isn’t saying much!) located a good distance from both the bus terminal and the downtown area by taxi ($2 - reasonable price!). Rooms are basic, spacious, fairly clean and come with color tv and a ceiling fan. Rooms without color tv are just $9 per night. They also have suites available for $23.50 per night. Friendly and helpful staff. Good reading lamp. An exceptional value. Very much recommended! Drawback: 1) Ants. 2) The toilet doesn’t flush properly. TRANCOSO, BRAZIL Name: Pousada Por do Sol Address: Price: $12 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1994 Review: In this tiny resort village located by bus and ferry from Porto Seguro, there are many basic and inexpensive pousadas to choose from and this is one of them. Adequate pousada located near where the bus stop is, in the center (what very little center there is) of town and a good distance from the beach. Rooms are basic, fairly clean and come with a mosquito net (much needed!). Recommended! Price does not included breakfast. Travel Tip: There are several eating establishments in town that serve breakfast at inexpensive prices. TRES ARROYOS, ARGENTINA Name: Hotel Parque Address: Price: $25 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1991 Review: Nice hotel located in the center of town and relatively close to the bus terminal. Rooms are clean, fairly spacious and come with color tv. Friendly and helpful staff. Recommended! TRES CORACOES, BRAZIL Name: Capri Hotel Address: av. Getulio Vargas 111 Price: $17 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1996 Review: Adequate hotel located a couple of blocks from the bus terminal and in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are simple and don’t come with anything except a small sink. Rooms with a private bathroom and color tv are $30. Good service. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. TRES LAGOAS, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Tres Lagoas Address: Price: $12 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1993 Review: Good hotel (and probably the best in the city) located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($5 - too high!) and three blocks from the center of town. Rooms are clean, simple and come with a fan and frigo bar. More expensive rooms include air conditioning and tv. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. Advisary: The hotel is not in the best area since it’s near the railroad tracks. It might be wise to take extra precaution during the day and avoid going out at night. TRES RIOS, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Comendador Address: rua Nelson Viana 210 Price: $34 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1994 Review: Good hotel located a few blocks from the bus terminal by taxi ($2.50 - honest price!) and in the downtown area. Rooms are clean, somewhat small and come with color tv, air conditioning and a well-stocked frigo bar. They have less expensive rooms but the desk clerk “claimed” they were out of those type of rooms. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. TREZE TILIAS, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Austria Address: rua Tirol 8 Price: $14.50 Rating: Best Value Reviewed: 1995 Review: This very friendly and peaceful town of 4,000 is reminiscent of a Swiss village in the Alps and remains relatively unspoiled by the tourist industry. There are four good hotels to suit most pocketbooks. The above mentioned hotel may be the least expensive of all. Very good Swiss type hotel conveniently located within walking distance from the bus terminal and in the center of town. Rooms are spacious (even after having four single beds and a crib in it) and come with a well-stocked frigo bar and color tv (many channels including an English speaking one). Very friendly and helpful staff. An exceptional value and highly recommended! Price includes an above average breakfast. TRIUNFO, BRAZIL Name: Polo Hotel Address: Price: $10 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1998 Review: Barely adequate hotel located several blocks from the bus terminal and in the center of town. Rooms appear to be fairly clean (not under the bed, though), somewhat small and come with only a bed. The bathroom is located down the hall. The green walls are ugly, dirty and marked up. This hotel is probably acceptable for an overnight stay. Very unfriendly desk clerk. Price includes breakfast. TRUJILLO, VENEZUELA Name: Hotel La Paz Address: Price: $22.50 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1997 Review: Very good hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by carrito ($0.11) and several blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are more like suites or mini apartments. The suite is extremely spacious and spotless. There is the main living room area with a full sized refrigerator that’s stocked with soft drinks, mineral water and beer. There’s also a glass-plated table for dining in with two chairs around it. Over to the other side of the room are two orange overstuffed chairs. The suite also include two simple but fairly comfortable bedrooms. In one of the bedrooms is a queen size bed with color tv (very few channels). In the other bedroom are just two twin beds in it. No air conditioning but comfortable without it. There isn’t a restaurant in the hotel but there’s a bakery nearby with wonderful tasting ham and cheese crouissant sandwiches. Friendly hotel staff. Highly recommended! Advisary: There are two hotels called Hotel La Paz. This one and the other near the bus terminal which can only be decsribed as miserable. Travel Tip: Believe it or not, there are no taxis at the bus terminal. I had to walk several blocks and, finally, a lady at a dry cleaning store helped me get on the right carrito to take me to my hotel. Carritos are like por puestos (shared vans) but are slightly smaller, more cramped and also run along fixed routes. TUBARAO, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Mussi Address: Price: $6 Rating: Best Value Reviewed: 1992 Review: Adequate one star hotel located within walking distance from the bus terminal and in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are basic but clean and some rooms have a view of the muddy river. Price includes breakfast. Recommended! TUCACAS, VENEZUELA Name: Hotel Gaeta Address: Price: $26.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1997 Review: In this somewhat expensive resort town of 15,100 there are a few hotels to choose from. Adequate hotel located just three blocks from the bus stop and on the main shopping street. Rooms are spotless, spacious and come with air conditioning and color tv. A little high, perhaps, for what you actually get but still recommended. TUCUMAN, ARGENTINA Name: Carlos V Hotel Address: Price: $46 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1991 Review: Very nice hotel located within the immediate downtown area. Rooms are clean, spacious, comfortable and come with air conditioning and color tv (including HBO). $5 less without. Highly recommended! TUPA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Central Plaza Address: rua Potiguarasi/av Tamoios Price: $21 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1998 Review: Good hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($3.50 - fair price!) and right on the main shopping street of the immediate downtown area. Rooms are fairly spacious, clean and come with color tv with remote control, air conditioning and a poorly stocked frigo bar. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. TUPANCIRETA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Sao Rafael Address: Price: $12 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1998 Review: Adeqaute hotel located a good walking distance from the bus terminal in one direction and the downtown area in the other direction. Actually, the hotel sits pretty much all by itself in a quiet residential part of town. Rooms are fairly spacious, fairly clean and come with a rickety old portable tv set with poor reception. Family run. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. |
