May - Las Vegas
I have never been fond of glitz, but Las Vegas demanded it. I have been saving CDs until I could figure out a way to use them. I heated them in boiling water and cut them with heavy-duty shears. I attached them with hot glue. I hope it holds them. The silver beads were left from another project and were an afterthought. They really pulled the mirrored CD pieces together and gave it some punch.
June - Oregon
The yellow lilies are blooming all over the yard. I tried printing with a linoleum block I cut several years ago. The image was very pale so I painted over it with fabric paints and added detail with paint crayons. All in all, only partially successful--overworked.
July - Colorado
The clear blue sky and puffy clouds piled high on the horizon are dramatic. Trying to capture the layers, the depth, the clouds using painted fabric and fused applique. I tried using gel glue as a resist on the clouds and the paint seeped under it in several places, so I painted over the bad spots with an opaque white paint. Looking at it now I realize I should have used more of the white paint to get the white-white highlights on the clouds.
August - Oregon
Late summer grasses. I used Setacolor Soleil paints using strips of paper, cut to look like grass, to block the sun and salt sprinkled for texture. Laying the wet painting in the sun with the strips of paper on top creates the lighter pattern. I love this technique and will definitely try using this paint again.
September - Oregon
I saw "Splendors of Imperial Japan" at the Portland Art Museum. Could I interpret Japanese porcelain in fabric? I used Setacolor paint with salt for the vase. I also used some metallic fabric I have had for years (but never used before), cutting squares and turning every other one for a subtle color change. I will try this again, but piece the fabric, rather than fuse it. The cut edges are messy. I couldn't bear to quilt through the vase, which I think would have flattened it visually.
