DUAL IGNITION COIL SYSTEM
BACK TO DRIVERS PAGE
The HV pulser of Steve Ward (SIDACS used as self- triggered switches in an ignition coil driver)
Big sparks can be obtained with a dual ignition coil circuit (with primaries connected in antiparallel and the secondaries in serie), drived directly from the mains with a simple light dimmer and capacitive limiting of the current.
The schema is very simple.
In my experiments I used a 6 uF @ 600 V cap and a 800 watt dimmer. The ignition coils were removed from their metalic enclosure and imersed in an oil bath
Long exposure pic (2 sec): 3 inches sparks
Long exposure pic (2 sec), 8 uF cap used:  4 inches sparks
MY OLD SETUP ( a simple plastic bowl with the coils in oil)
                      MY NEW SETUP
RESULTS:
ARCS: 5 INCHES +          12 uF CAP, 220 VAC INPUT
ARCS: 6 INCHES +         220 VAC INPUT
I used for this time only a 4 uF cap. With higher capacity the sparks are very bright but the triac fail to drive and the long sparks can not develop. With smaller caps, the sparks are not very bright but longer.
