TEXADA TAVERN-OLD NATCHEZ
Constance Dalrymple Birkholm
Don Manuel Garcia de Texada owned and eventually lived in the Texada Tavern. The
former Spanish General Consul of Spain in New Orleans, Jose Montero de Pedro,
Marques de Casa Mena cites the dates as
1797-1817(Don Manuel's death).J.Wesley
Cooper cites 1799-1817 as correct.
Manuel Texada, called "Garcia" within his
family, arrived in Natchez by ship in 1781
and remained there until his death in 1817.
It is generally thought that he was a law-
yer, possibly part of the Cabildo-- a city
council of the day, or one of the lawyers
of the Intendent, those specializing in the
properties and taxes for the Crown.  He was at one time assigned the duty of as-
sessing the roads, determining the proper
taxes, and making certain that the taxes
went to the Crown. In his full will, he re-
fers to himself as "abrogado," meaning ei-
ther lawyer or mediator.
In recent texts written about the early Catholic Church in Natchez, it is said
that had Manuel Texada not made the
bequest which he made to the Catholic
community of Natchez, a parish would
not have been established for a very long
time.

Natchez.
The history of Manuel Texada's family is held by
many people, as various branches of the family have inherited papers and books and even oral history along the way. It is exciting to search for
the pieces of the puzzle. Members of the family
enjoy sharing information with everyone always
alert to the possibility that something new to all of
us could surface. We now have access to much more data than anyone before us has had.
