Erkundige dich rechtzeitig bei deiner Schule, ob du das Schuljahr ueberspringen kannst. Wenn ja, informiere dich, welche Faecher du an deiner high school waehlen musst, damit dir das Jahr angerechnet wird und welche Schulbuecher du aus Deutschland mitnehmen solltest, auch wenn du sicher nicht viel Zeit zum Lernen haben wirst.
In manchen Bundeslaendern musst du einige Tests machen, wenn du wiederkommst, um das Jahr zu ueberspringen. Nimm dir vor allem fuer die Faecher, in denen du getestet werden wirst, Buecher zum Lernen mit.

In Hessen gehst du nach deiner Rueckkehr erst zehn Wochen in deinem normalen Jahrgang zur Schule. Dann entscheiden die Lehrer, ob du in diesem Jahrgang bleiben kannst oder ob du das letzte Jahr wiederholen musst.

Die amerikanische Schule oder die Organisation verlangt oft beglaubigte Zeugnisse, um dich im Gastland in den richtigen Jahrgang einzustufen und um festzustellen ob du geeignet bist, ein Jahr an einer anderen Schule ohne Bildungsmangel und Folgeschaeden zu ueberstehen.
Bitte einen guten Freund oder eine gute Freundin, dir regelmaessig die neuesten Schulinfos zu mailen, damit du nicht im Wald stehst, wenn du in dein alte Schule zurueckkommst und nicht weisst, was abgeht. Er oder sie kann dir dann auch manchmal Arbeiten oder Aufgabenblaetter schicken, die du zwar nie anschauen wirst, die aber doch eine Moeglichkeit waeren, mit dem Lernstoff an der deutschen Schule mitzuhalten.
Zum Schluss, informier alle deine Freunde und Feinde, dass du das naechste Schuljahr nicht im Lande sein wirst und sie sich nicht ueber dein Verschwinden wundern oder freuen (Feinde) sollen. Organisier eine Riesenabschiedsparty oder feier im kleinen Kreis deinen Abschied fuer ein Jahr, tausch (E-Mail)Adressen aus, sag allen, sie sollen dir ganz oft schreiben (was die meisten nach einem Monat sowieso nicht mehr tun werden), gib ihnen deine neue Adresse, wenn du sie schon hast und freu dich auf das naechste Jahr, von der alten Schule und allen langweiligen Lehrern entfernt.

If yes, find out, what classes you have to choose at you new highschool, so that your schoolyear in your hostcountry will be counted, and what schoolbooks you should take with you, even though you won't have a lot of time to to study with them.
In some states in Germany, you have to take some tests, when you return, to scip the year. Take books especially for those classes you will be tested in.
In Bavaria, you have to take a test in the classes you want to drop in your senior years.

In Hesse, you go to school in the class you'd normally be in after your return, for ten weeks. After that, the teachers decide whether you can stay in your class or whether you have to repeat the last year.

Inform yourself at your school about the policies of other states.
The american school or the organisation often needs some of your report cards (which, in Germany, we get after every semester) to put you in the right class in your hostcountry and to find out if you are able to survive a year in a foreign school without becoming ignorant about the subjects you'd learn in Germany.
Ask a good friend to send you the news of your school, so your won't be considered stupid when you return and don't know what's going on. He or she can also send you some tests or worksheets that you'll never look at, but that might be a possibility to learn, what your classmates are learning in Germany.
In the end, inform all your friends and enemies that you won't be in Germany for the next school year and they won't wonder or be happy (your enemies) about your disappearance. Give a big Good-Bye Party or celebrate your departure with some good friends, exchange (E-Mail)adresses, tell everyone that they have to write you a lot (what most of them won't do anymore after about a month anyway), give them your new adress, if you know it already, and look forward to the next year, away from your old school and all the boring teachers.
