Gardabaer Chess Club (GCC) is one of the strongest chess clubs in Iceland. It was founded in 1980 and has been active ever since.
In 1992 Gardabaer for the first and only time in its history won the Icelandic chess club championship. This secured it the right to take part in the European Chess Club Championships at Barbican Centre in London in 1993 where GCC was knocked out in the first round by a Dutch club containing such grandmasters as Korchnoi, Speelman and van der Wiel. The Club won next 3 rounds and ended in 5. place out of 8 teams. |
