About the Book:
Plot Summary: Thirteen year old Jessie has lived most of her life on a nineteenth century frontier village in Indiana.  Until her mother tells her, she did not realize she was really living in a twentieth century toutrist attraction.  Something like Big Brother meets Plimouth Plantation.  Lately a lot of the kids, including Jessie's little sister have been sick with diptheria, a disease curable with modern medicine, but the people in charge of the village refuse to bring medical health AND they are guarding the exits to the village.  Jessie's Ma has a plan to call the state to bring in the help the village, but Jessie is the best person to sneak out.  Unfortunatly Jessie doesn't know anything about the twentieth century having been tricked into thinking the year was really 1840.  Relying on her wits and the things her mother told her about the "future," Jessie journeys out to help her sister and the other kids.
My comments: ****  Okay, this book is pretty funny.  It explores the reactions of someone from the past to life now (or 1996, but does that really matter?).  Time travel has always appealled to me, and I like that this books makes it sound realistic as it will ever be.
