Sabé, Saché, Eirtaé, Yané, Rabé, Cordé, Dormé and Versé, Padmé's loyal bodyguards, most of them looking a lot like her, but who are they really?
Sabé was the most important of Queen Amidala's royal retinue of handmaidens. During crisis situations, Sabé and Amidala switch roles. Sabé becomes a decoy, disguised as the Queen, while Amidala adopts a simple gown of a handmaiden, and goes by her less formal name of Padmé Naberrie. During the Trade Federation invasion of Naboo, Sabé posed as the Queen on several occasions.
The four other handmaidens who served Queen Amidala during the Naboo crisis were known as Saché, Eirtaé, Yané and Rabé. When they were forced to land on Tatooine for reparation and as they didn't have the money to buy the missing pieces of the ship, Yané and Saché decided to stay on the planet in guarentee, waiting that the Jedi Knights, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, return to free them and give the money to the junkdealer. Unfortunately, when Obi-Wan (now that Qui-Gon was dead) returned on Tatooine, the handmaidens had disapeared, being resold by the junkdealer, what greatly frustrated Padmé who was considering her handmaidens as her friends above all.
Ten years later, as Padmé was now a senator, Sabé, Eirtaé and Rabé quit their jobs to have a life of their own and were replaced by Cordé and Dormé. Cordé died in the explosion of Padmé's ship. While Senator Amidala was going on Naboo with Anakin, Dormé stayed on Coruscant.
Later, after Anakin and Padmé's marriage, Versé joined the other handmaidens. Padmé also called back Sabé, Eirtaé and Rabé, and they happily agreed to take back their job near Padmé Naberrie Palpatine.
Officially, it was written in their contract that they should take care and look after Luke and Leia, but as they are real pests, the handmaidens refused to look after the children, explaining to Padmé that if they were her decoys, they should look like her, but if they were taking care of these little brats, they would grow old too quickly compared to Padmé. Padmé understood and decided to remove this condition of their contracts, letting Luke and Leia with nobody to look after them.
