March, 2000

edited and condensed from the print version

Many of us who have been modelling and developing  layouts for some years acquired ready to run models from Airfix, Great Model Railways ( GMR), Mainline, Replica and early Bachmann. While reflecting fine detail these models performed very porly and in recognition of this Bachmann now market a range of motorized chassis replacements that reflect current performance. Geof Chandler has replaced several of his including the GWR Mogul, Manor and pannier tanks fromthe early Bachmann range. Motorised chassis replacement is quick and straighforward.

The 2000 Hornby catalogue was available in mid february. There are a lot of new developments including a new correct scale version of the Coronation Class and three versions of the Rebuilt Merchant Navy. oth of these models will not be available until the later part of this year. There is also a J-13 in GNR livery. Hornby intends to phase out tender drive locomotives.

We now have a number of railway books in our library and a list will be made available at the meetings if members wish to borrow them.

Submissions for the newsletter are welcome from members. Submissions should be brief and preferably produced on a word processor but not mandatory.

A reminder that the Buffers recieve a copy of the "Coupling" the newsletter of the Platelayers of Toronto, we also send them a copy of our newsletter.

Buffers spent an enjoyable afternnon at the home of Grant Miles. In addition to viewing Grants collection members also had the opportunity to view the developments in the modules that are being prepared for the Great British Train Show in April. The members involved in the project have been meeting regularly to discuss and develop these modules and the fruits of their labour are beginning to show.

Thanks to Grant for his hospitality.

During the meeting the following topics were discussed:

-That all paid up members for the year 2000 be provided with an identification tag for use at shows and meetings.

- It was also suggested that a visit could be arranged to Tom Walters layout in Petrolia.
Tom is a member of The Buffers ( west) and a visit may be arranged on the way to our meeting in Sarnia/Pt Edward in May.

- Members also discussed our late friend Les Torrens. Joe Chaisson suggested that
some identification on the modules now being prepared could recognise Les's name, such as the "Les Torrens Mine."
