Auguste Delatour takes a thin rectangular box from her shoulder bag and opens it, carefully removing the contents: a simple picture frame with a vintage fashion sketch inside.
Auguste Delatour holds up the frame so that everyone can see the artwork. The gown depicted features a white satin bodice decorated with embroidery and beading in the palest of blues. The full floor-length skirt is an ethereal cloud of tulle, gathered in intricate ways by strands of pastel blue glass beads. The drawing is signed 'Camille de la Tour' and dated '1955.'

    "This Amati violin was built in 1640 in a little town in Italy called Cremona by a man named Nicolaus Amatus. There were numerous violin makers at that time, but not too many ever became known."

    "However, Nicolaus Amatus, Amati, as he was known, produced some of the finest violins of that century and became famous as a violin maker and teacher."

    "My grandfather brought this violin with him from France when he came to Canada in 1889."

    "He had bought it for his oldest son, August, in hopes he would learn to play it, but he never did. "

    "My uncle August then gave it to his youngest son, Andrew, since he had learned to play it a little. In the years that followed, Andrew practically ruined it. He dropped it and broke it a number of times, and at last he removed all the varnish from it, which in itself is a mortal sin."

    "In the meantime, I had acquired an old violin and learned to play it. So one day when I was at his place, I picked up his violin, tuned it, and began to play it, much to his surprise, since he didn't know I could play."

    "It was my 15th birthday, so he gave it to me. It was one of the happiest days of my life. Since I knew the violin, its origin, and had longed to some day own it, never dreaming I ever would."
