Teka Smith says, "okay, here goes nothing. "
Teka Smith grabs Veronica's fancy microphone out of her backpack..
Teka Smith says, "Testing....1....2...3..."
Teka Smith taps on the microphone, examines it, then turns it on. She glances around the room blushing profusely.
Teka Smith brings the microphone close to her mouth and speaks into it.
Teka Smith says, "Well, it's nice to see everyone here tonight. I've never done this sort of thing before and I'm a tad nervous."
Teka Smith smiles anxiously.
Teka Smith says, "I guess my name is rather unusual, so I thought perhaps you'd like to hear my story.  It's not my real name, as you may have guessed, but, it's what I've been called since I was little.   "
Teka Smith says, "Because I get so nervous, I thought it best I write it down, lest I forget something, so please bear with me."
Teka Smith gets a piece of paper out of her backpack, unfolds it, clears her throat, and begins to read a poem to you.
Teka Smith recites:

    "When I was just a little child,
     About the age of one.
     My momma said," now sweetheart,
     We're going to have some fun."

Teka Smith recites:

    "I'm going to take you somewhere.
     'tis a special treat it is.
     We're going to a jungle place
     Where  special birdies live."

Teka Smith recites:

    "I ran to get my backpack,
     And filled it with my stuff
     Like peanut butter sandwiches
     Underwear and..."

Teka Smith glances around the room looking for Mark Grant, turns a bright red and laughs.
Mark Grant says, "mmmm Fluff... "
Teka Smith recites:

    "Fluff!"

Teka Smith recites:

    "We drove to the nearest airport.
     On the airplane we did fly.
     I was so very excited,
     As the plane soared way up high."

Teka Smith recites:

    "When we reached our destination
     A cab my mommy hailed.
     It took us to this great big place
     And we grabbed a monorail."

Teka Smith recites:

    "We rode it for a short time.
     Then we got off on the ground
     I saw a Mouse named Mickey
     Waiting to take me around."

Teka Smith recites:

    "He took me to this jungle hut
     Where tiki birds reside
     I listened to their singing
     And was totally captivized."

Teka Smith recites:

    "I loved their songs of enchantment.
     And when I closed my eyes.
     I felt that I was one with them.
     Then what to my surprise."

Teka Smith recites:

    "I began to sing their song with them.
     Tho I had a childish lisp.
     I filled my lungs with lots of air
     And my song came out like this."

Teka Smith sings:

Teka Smith asks, "So ever since that day I've been called Teka. That's my story. Thank you for listening. Are there any questions?"

    "I sometimes think I was born to live up to my name. How could I be anything else but what I am having been named Madonna? I would either have ended up a nun or this."

Shiva Malone says, "It wasn't easy for me to find the reason my parents named me Shiva.  They've been dead since I was 8.  My sister is missing, and I know she would be the one to ask.  Thank goodness I was born with wonderful -- okay, usually wonderful -- gifts.  I was able to speak with my mom through some deep thoughts and a small seance."

Shiva Malone says, "I was, however, unable to find information on "Shiva" in Japan, other than the beliefs of him destroying things."

Chase Evans says, "Well, anyway, about my name. My daddy use to raise hundred of jackrabbits each and every year. Now when I say hundreds, I mean all kinds. Black, spotted, white, tan, brown, striped, even some polka-dotted ones too! They is some dirty and stinky mutts, but just plain ugly things. They were all screwing, like, rabbits really"
Chase Evans chuckles.
Chase Evans says, "So, anyway, he use to chase  em around the yard, and try to catch em in this big old brown bag. He said it would make them stronger than the other jackrabbits in the neighborhood, and then he could raise the bigger better jackrabbits. "
Chase Evans flexes his arm, showing off a rock hard series of tightly-bunched muscles.
Chase Evans says, "Kinda like me"
Chase Evans grins.
Chase Evans clears his throat loudly.
Chase Evans says, "Silly things"
Chase Evans gazes dreamily at nothing in particular.
Chase Evans says, "Never had a trouble catching a one."

Chase Evans exclaims, "NOT A ONE!"
Chase Evans says, "Until this one . a big polka-dotted one."
Chase Evans chuckles.
Chase Evans says, "Just kidding, he was just a regular old brown jackrabbit, a real dirty one"
Chase Evans says, "And my daddy was in his fifth or sixth year of raisin  jackrabbits, so he had seen some jackrabbits in his days. But this one, he just couldn t catch."
Chase Evans gets a distant look on his face as he ponders.
Chase Evans asks, "He told me, while he was lying  on his deathbed, that that jackrabbit had reminded him of my mother. My momma was the foxiest lady in town, and we lived in a pretty small town  but where did you think I got my good looks?"
Jennifer Plumley says, "Four minutes."
Chase folds his arms and flashes a playful smile, striking a dramatic pose for all those gathered.
Chase Evans exclaims, "So, he had to chase her around quite a bit, but he finally got her in the sack too!"
Chase Evans says, "Evans, was his name, that nice brown jackrabbit that just didn t want to be in a dirty old sack."
Chase Evans grins.
Chase Evans says, "So, for four weeks and four days, he chased that jackrabbit around our little yard."
Chase Evans gazes dreamily at nothing in particular.
Chase Evans says, "Finally did catch  em."
Chase Evans sighs.
Chase Evans exclaims, "No, I m not a jackrabbit!"
Chase Evans says, "Just always been called Chase Evans. I was conceived on the night of the fourth day after the fourth week, when my daddy finally caught that strong jackrabbit"

Kid Dark says, "As most of you know, my name is not very common for an American such as myself.  To examine the origins of my name, I must tell you all something I have never told anyone.  My past."
Kid Dark says, "Since I was 7 years old, I have lived a normal life with a normal family in a normal city in Illinois.  My parents and brothers have been very good to me these past 12 years, but before that time...it's a completely different story."
Kid Dark frowns.
Kid Dark says, "My mother, father, and brothers are not my real family.  Bloodwise, I am an only child.  I have fought long and hard to forget my birth parents whose names I do not care to mention.  I have also fought hard to forget my past, but my past's effect on my present is still there."
Kid Dark says, "I was born Adam Dark in a small suburb of San Francisco.  From that time until about age 3, I seemed to live a normal life.  However, my parent's disturbingly anti-Christian ideas turned evil, and the created a form of cult based on their own ideas of existence.  There were a surprising amount of followers."
Kid narrows his eyes.
Kid Dark rubs a black and crimson yin-yang pendant.
Kid Dark says, "The "Desciples of Fate."  That was the group's name.  We were all taught that everything we did was based on the decisions of an omnipotent being known as Fate.  We were trained in numerous arts for my parents' Christian downfall, of which I will neglect to mention.  Arts such as sword training, prowling, bullet evasion, emotion supression, and desensitivity were taught to us daily...no, all the time."
Kid Dark seems furious.
Kid Dark frowns.
Kid Dark seems calm.
Kid Dark says, "I digress.  To the main point of the story, around one year into the Desciples' creation, my parents decided that everyone's name, if it involved anything related to Christianity, must be changed.  They decided that we would all be named according to a form of call sign, based on appearance or ability."
Kid Dark says, "My last name remained unchanged.  My first name, Adam, was obviously a part of Christianity.  Hence, my parents decided to rename me.  I was the only child in the group, so my parents decided to rename me Kid.  Since that time, even after my rejection of the teachings of Fate, I have never been able to reject my name.  I will not answer to anything other than Kid.  I have a feeling something psychological was done to prevent that..."
Kid Dark sighs.
Kid Dark says, "That is the origin of my name; no, my parents were not extreme hippies who just wanted to name their kid Kid like some people name their dog Dog."
Jennifer Plumley says, "Three minutes."
Kid Dark just made a funny face.
Kid Dark says, "Most of my ties with the Disciples are severed, yet my training, personality, and most obviously, my name, all remain.  Hence, the origin of Kid.  My escape, adoption, etcetera are part of another story."

You say, "Well, first of all, Auguste is actually my middle name. Due to my never having learned French, I pronounce it like the adjective august. I wouldn't be surprised if de la Tour had been turned into Delatour in a similar manner."
You chuckle.
You say, "As for what my first name really is, that's a secret. "

You say, "The story behind my middle name is something of a mystery."
You say, "According to my parents, it was my great-grandmother, Camille de la Tour, who chose it. They weren't sure why she picked Auguste but they agreed to use it. "
You say, "Camille passed away soon after my birth so I never had the opportunity to ask her myself. For a long time, I wondered why she gave me this unusual middle name. "
You say, "I now have a theory based on some letters that Camille left behind. They were in a box of papers that had been tucked away in a closet and forgotten after her death. I finally came across them a few years ago. "
You say, "They were written in French, apparently drafts of letters that she sent and the replies that she received. Some of these letters were either signed by or addressed to an Auguste. "
You say, "I had to know what those letters said. I felt that they might finally reveal the story behind my name. "
You say, "Neither my parents nor I understood French so I asked a classmate to translate them for me. From her efforts, I discovered my likely namesake."

You say, "Camille and her husband, Louis, were couturiers in Paris prior to the Second World War. During those days, they had a young man named Auguste in their employ."
You say, "They both felt that he had great promise and considered him to be their protege. However, they would be separated by the war. "
Auguste Delatour frowns slightly.
You say, "The Germans had wanted to take over Parisian couture and desired the closure of the French workshops, even setting up a heavily subsidized couture industry in Berlin. "
You say, "The archives of the couturiers' association were seized and the designers were pressured to move their operations to Berlin and Vienna. As unlikely as it might seem, the monopoly of French couture was considered to be a threat."
You say, "Some of the Parisian couturiers closed their businesses during that period. Vionnet retired, Chanel would not reopen until the fifties, Mainbocher returned to America, Worth and Molyneux moved to England. "
You say, "Camille and Louis were among this group. Despite misgivings, they decided to close their couture house and relocate."
You say, "They had asked Auguste to join them in New York but he declined, not wishing to leave his family, including an ailing grandmother who he particularly adored. "

Auguste Delatour pauses for a moment and gazes around the room, the distant look finally leaving her face. She seems a bit surprised as she drifts out of her reverie and gives a little nervous laugh. From her expression, it seems like she's trying to recall what she was going to say.
You say, "I've always liked my middle name since it's much more distinctive and uncommon than my first name. However, it does cause some amusing misunderstandings at times."
You smile.
You say, "Auguste has been used mostly for boys so some people who haven't met me assume that I'm a guy based on my name. If anyone here thinks that, this room is seriously in need of better lighting. I'm sure most guys wouldn't be caught dead in this outfit."
You grin.
You flick your fingers against a little black dress.
You flick your fingers against a long red trench coat with sleeve cuffs turned back to reveal a leopard print lining.
You say, "And then there are some people who will try to rename me August or Augusta. "
You say, "Still, I think that Auguste suits me pretty well. Although I was a business major in college, I was really interested in design. Perhaps, I will work in the same field as my namesake one day."

You say, "Auguste has also been the first or middle name of several artists: the painters Renoir and Ingres and the sculptor Rodin, who now has a studio named in his honor at the art school. So, I think it is appropriate for me given my artistic aspirations."
