[Royal Palace, Majestic Hall]
An intricately designed rug stretches across the length of the richly appointed hall.  Hanging from the high domed ceiling, a mammoth chandelier showers sparkling patterns across the bottom of a wide stairway.  Antique suits of armor stand guard at regular intervals along the south wall.  The Alvarez Royal Crest is presented in low relief above archways going east and west.  You also see some pink and silver balloons attached to a large wooden sign with an arrow pointing to the west archway.

Britney Carson recites:

"Hello, and welcome to the Quilting Project of 2002. My name is Britney Carson, and I will be hosting the event this evening."

Britney Carson recites:

"Today I will be discussing the aspects of quilting: How it all started, how it advanced, and where it is today, in our lives, and the ways we can use quilting to express our ideas and creativity."

Britney Carson recites:

"Afterwards, we will hold a contest in which you will use the pencil and paper provided to you in order to draw your own quilt."

Britney Carson smiles.
Britney Carson recites:

    "So let's get started!"

Britney Carson recites:

"Throughout American history quilting has been a way for women to express their creativity. Before the early part of the 19th century most quilting was done by those who could afford household help. Women would cut out flowers and other motifs then carefully turn a tiny seam and apply them to a large piece of solid fabric."

Britney Carson recites:

"By 1850 the manufacture of textiles had moved to being factory based. Ordinary women no longer had to spend hours a day spinning and weaving. At last they could find the time to be more creative including the making of quilts. This opportunity blossomed into quilting as the art of the everyday woman."

Britney Carson recites:

"In the mid 1800s Signature Quilts became popular. These ranged from the fine Sampler Album Quilts of beautiful applique to quite simple blocks with a place on each for friends to sign their names. Families in America were mobile then as they are now. Friendship Quilts became a precious memory of old friends."

Britney Carson recites:

"Quilts played a vital role during the Civil War. Soldiers desperately needed warm bedcoverings and women tried their best to meet that need. Women also made mourning quilts in memory of lost brothers, husbands and sons. Scraps of clothing that belonged to the loved one were often included."

Britney Carson recites:

"Quilts were also made for soldiers and for fundraising giving women a way to help, and at the same time engaging them in the soothing act of quilting. By the end of the war it is estimated that over 250,000 quilts and comforts had been made for Union soldiers."

Britney Carson recites:

"The 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition inspired the Crazy Quilts that were so popular in Victorian society. These quilts were made using velvets, silks, and brocades cut and pieced in random shapes. Women then embroidered along the seams with fancy stitches."

Britney Carson recites:

"There was a great revival of quilting in the 1920s and the popularity of quilting continued through the depression years. The creating of a beautiful quilt helped people forget the hard times they were going through. It was also a way to add a touch of beauty to a home using fabric already at hand."

Britney Carson recites:

"There is no doubt that quilting has reflected the lives, hopes and dreams of women over the decades."

Britney Carson recites:

"In our current crisis people are finding that quilting not only sooths the pain of loss but also distracts us from the anxiety that occurs in times of national crisis."

Britney Carson recites:

"As it did for women generations before us quilting is helping us concentrate on creation rather than destruction. The soft feel of washed cotton is soothing to our hands. As we sort out the cut shapes of fabric and organize how we will place them we also sort out our own fears and priorities."

Britney Carson recites:

"Quilting has given us a mindful space where we can begin to consider the overwhelming problems that we face. We take the scattered pieces of fabric and create something brand new, something beautiful and uniquely ours."

Britney Carson recites:

"Today I want you to do just that. I want you to create something you can call yours, that represents you."

Samson Spade says, "Some of these folks are long on imagination and style"
Britney Carson smiles.
Britney Carson recites:

"It is now time for the contest to begin. For judging, I will need one Island Guide, one tourist below their tenth promotion, and one tourist above their tenth promotion. Using the pencil and paper provided, you will draw a picture of your quilt and what it would look like."

Morgan LeFox exclaims, "What a wonderful presentation too, Brit. Informative and moving. Good inspiration!"
Britney Carson smiles at Morgan LeFox.
Gregor Popov exclaims, "I am thinking I will design a circus quilt, featuring a clown car that has a never-ending stream of maids coming out of it!"
(A group of hyperactive maids kept dashing through the hall during the event. It was quite distracting and made me want to scream. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.)
Morgan LeFox begins laughing at Gregor Popov!
Gregor Popov beams happily.
You chuckle at Gregor Popov.

Britney Carson recites:

    "Now, for the rules."

Britney Carson recites:

"You will be drawing and describing your quilts using ACTions. Presentations will be 3-5 minutes long. If you begin to go over, I'll let you know."

Britney Carson recites:

"While describing your quilts, and the pictures, scenes, or images on them, explain to us why you drew what you did, and why that symbol is important to you."

Britney Carson recites:

"The three areas of judgement are based on creativity, ability to stay IC while describing your quilt, and originality. After all the contestants have gone, the judges will determine who the top three quilt designers are. Prizes will be awarded to those top three."

Britney Carson recites:

"The first prize will be to have their quilt made by the blanket and quilt merchants from the Boardwalk Sale this past year."

Britney Carson recites:

    "Any questions?"

Britney Carson recites:

"Okay, if you will be please raise your hands, to determine the order of your presentation."

Esmeralda Buckland raises her hand.
Natalie StJaques raises her hand.
Griffin Hamill raises his hand.

Britney Carson says, "She'll go after you."
Natalie StJaques blushes a nice shade of off-pink.

Esmeralda Buckland takes a deep breath of air.
Britney Carson smiles.
Esmeralda Buckland releases the air from her lungs.
Mark Grant just kissed Miranda.
Esmeralda Buckland says, "When I was a little girl, my family used to park our trailers in farmers' fields.  After everyone went to bed, and the bonfire died down, my mother and I used to lie on our backs and look at the stars."
Esmeralda Buckland says, "She would point out the constellations to me and tell me all their names.  Because she never went to school and learned the names the gajes gave the stars... gaje means non-Roma... her names were different than what you probably know them as."
Esmeralda Buckland says, "I designed my quilt to remind me not only of the nights I used to spend with my mother, gazing up at the stars, but also of the origins of my people, the landless, traveling Rom."
Esmeralda Buckland shows a sketch of a dusky blue and black velvet quilt sewn in a multi-spoked wheel with glittering rhinestone accents.
Esmeralda Buckland points out the details of the drawing: dusky blue and black velvet triangles form a large wheel pattern on a royal blue velvet field.  Glittering diamondesque rhinestones are scattered liberally over the quilt creating dazzling constellations familiar to the eye.  The entire piece is edged with three-inch wide black lace as soft to the touch as a whisper in your ear.
Esmeralda Buckland points out a constellation.
Esmeralda Buckland says, "This is Vardo, the gypsy wagon.  In the old days my people traveled from land to land in colorfully decorated wagons that were our houses on wheels."
Esmeralda Buckland points out a second constellation.
Esmeralda Buckland says, "This is The Gypsy Queen.  My mother used to always tell me stories about when my grandmother was young.  She was beautiful and wild and independent, like my mother.  My mother said that I am very much like her.  This makes me happy because she was well respected.  The Gypsy Queen reminds me of my grandmother."
Morgan LeFox smiles at Esmeralda Buckland.
Esmeralda Buckland points out other constellations, telling you their Roma names and how they relate to life on the road.  When she is finished, you are left with a distinct wanderlust and a heartful of longing.
Natalie StJaques nods understandingly at Esmeralda.
Esmeralda Buckland says, "And that's my design."
Esmeralda Buckland smiles.

Natalie StJaques smiles softly, "I was rummaging through an old hope chest that my parents purchased for me when I was a mere girl.   I found several sketches of quilts among my grandmother's fine works."
Natalie StJaques removes a yellowed envelope from her purse. "I've taken the liberty of bringing them along to inspire my work this evening. My design will be done on blue and white gingham with soft velvet, crepe, and silk in a rainbow of pastel tones."
Natalie StJaques shows you a sketch of a whole note shaped quilt the outer edge of which contains a set of small designs.   She wanders around the room showing each of you her design.
Natalie StJaques reaches you and you can see that the oval shaped design is the life cycle of a small blue bird.  The bird begins life, learns to sing and is shown singing for large groups of birds yet it appears as if the bird, while happy is in some type of cage.
Morgan LeFox smiles at Natalie StJaques.
Mark Grant smiles.
Natalie StJaques touches her throat gently as you see her drawing contains a picture of the bird with a ribbon around its throat as musical notes trail off the quilt's side.  In the very center of the quilt the bird sits apparently healing on the ground beneath it lie designs depicting arts, crafts, faces, sports, life's breath, beauty and the dove of hope.
Kri Caselli nods.
Natalie StJaques smiles, "Some of you know that I used to be a shall we say well known chanteuse of opera style music."

Natalie StJaques looks thoughtful, " My design shows where I have been and what brought me to this point of renewal and new beginnings.  I have lived a life many would find enchanting and yet I always felt something was missing."
Natalie StJaques giggles, " Now, as you can see on this little drawing, I have found that my throat cancer has freed me from that fabulous cage and thrust me into a life filled with choices, brilliant colors, laughter and I hope love."
Natalie StJaques blushes a nice shade of off-pink.
Kri Caselli grins.
Natalie StJaques looks gratefully at Brittany, " Thank you so much for allowing me to express my feelings and hopes.  From my search for the old sketches to right now.... well suffice it to say I feel freer than I ever imagined."

Britney Carson smiles.
Mark Grant says, "come on griffin"
Griffin Hamill says, "Okay, mine is a pretty simple design. My buddies used to take me to a lot of beaches"
Esmeralda Buckland smiles at Griffin Hamill.
Griffin Hamill says, "So around the outside of my quilt is this sandy suede color"
Griffin Hamill says, "that's the beach"
Griffin Hamill says, "and in the middle is a deep blue color with wavy edges"
Griffin Hamill says, "that would be the water"
Samson Spade says, "I see that."
Samson Spade nods.
Griffin Hamill says, "around the sand there are different circles of many colors which are beach balls"
Griffin Hamill says, "all the way around the edges of the quilt"
Griffin Hamill says, "In the very center of the quilt is a large sailboat"

Britney Carson smiles.
Mark Grant is applauding you!
Esmeralda Buckland bounces in her seat excitedly.
You say, "Uh, okay..."
Auguste Delatour pulls a ruler out of her purse and uses it to create a rectangular grid of small squares on the paper. Rummaging through her shoulder bag, Auguste selects colored pencils in various shades of blue, green, and purple. Auguste meticulously colors the individual squares, adding tiny floral patterns.
Auguste Delatour finishes the sketch with a bit of golden brown and shows it to everyone present. After examining the colorful squares for a moment, you realize that it is an impressionistic rendering of a peacock with its tail spread.
You drop a sharpened pencil.
You say, "As you can probably tell, my quilt is an impressionist style representation of a peacock. I chose this particular style for my quilt because I'm rather fond of impressionistic paintings. "
Britney Carson smiles.
You say, "Although cross stitch and counted thread work are my specialties, I have dabbled in other needlecrafts. "
Gregor Popov grins at you.
You say, "However, I never seriously attempted to quilt. My one attempt at it back in New York never made it past the piecing stage. It turned into what stitchers refer to as a UFO: an unfinished object."
You chuckle.
Griffin Hamill chuckles.
Miranda Myles chuckles.
Esmeralda Buckland smiles.
Britney Carson smiles.
Natalie StJaques covers her mouth and gigles.
You say, "But I did occasionally browse through quilting books and some quilts that particularly interested me were those done in an impressionistic style with squares of floral patterned fabrics visually blending to form pictures. "
You say, "In a way, a design consisting of all squares but in many colors and artistically arranged appeals to my crafting preferences too. Like cross stitch, it's artistic but precise. My needlework was particularly noted for its technical aspects during exhibitions in the States."
You smile.
You say, "As for the subject matter..."
You pet a deep green detachable train covered with peacock feathers.
You say, "If you've taken a good look at my outfit, you might have already guessed that peacocks are among my favorite animals. I simply love their wonderful colors. "
Esmeralda Buckland smiles at you.
Griffin Hamill smiles at you.
You grin.
Esmeralda Buckland completely agrees with you.
Esmeralda Buckland exclaims, "Roma birds!"
You get a stuffed peacock from inside your shoulder bag.

Miranda Myles chuckles.
Gregor Popov is applauding you!
Britney Carson smiles.
Samson Spade says, "Their hoot is like a scream to me, tho"
Samson Spade chuckles.
Auguste Delatour makes the stuffed peacock nod in agreement. "Say hello to everyone." Auguste waves one of the stuffed peacock's wings.
Esmeralda Buckland grins.
Natalie StJaques covers her mouth and giggles.
Griffin Hamill waves to the peacock.
You say, "In addition to being one of my favorite animals, a peacock is also the logo used by one of my favorite needlework designers. Since I stitched so many of the Just Nan designs, some stitching friends used to call me 'the Just Nan Queen.' "
You grin.
You say, "A couple of my favorite completed pieces included a sampler of hers that featured peacocks and an evening bag that I created based on the sampler pattern. Due to the unreliable nature of the Moradian ferry service, both are still at my old home in New York.   "
Griffin Hamill grins at you.
You ponder for a moment and reflect.
You say, "Well, I guess that's all I have to say. Wave goodbye, Percy."
Miranda Myles is applauding you!
Mark Grant is applauding you!

Morgan LeFox smiles at Gregor Popov.
Natalie StJaques covers her mouth and giggles.
Gregor Popov says, "My design uses a dominance of traditional Slavic colours - white (purity) and red (joy) accented with gold threads, for reasons that will become obvious to you in a moment."
Gregor Popov reveals a topsy-turvy design featuring famous Byelarussian Olympic Heros tumbling, lifting enormous weights and hitting colorful tennis balls over the net.
Gregor Popov spreads out the entire quilt and you are able to see a pattern emerge... names, faces and other icons shine in gold upon the red and white cotton batting.
Natalie StJaques says, "OOOOohhhh,how unique"
Esmeralda Buckland smiles at Gregor Popov.
Gregor Popov says, "Some of you here may have heard my story, if so I apologize for the repeat. When I was only 9 some government sports officials took me away to a camp to allow my athletic talent to florish.  I did as i was told, for the good of all.  The time away from my family was very painful, but there was a method to the madness, as evidenced by this part of the quilt:"
Gregor Popov points to a golden medal design that captures the look of those given out in 1980 in Moscow.
Gregor Popov beams happily.
Gregor Popov says, "This is the result of my hard work."
Gregor Popov taps an ornamented gold medal.
Gregor Popov beams happily.
Natalie StJaques exclaims, "How wonderful!"
Gregor Popov taps the corresponding quilt square.
Gregor Popov says, "This is a fair representation of the medal I won for all-around in the Gymnastics.  My regret is that I was unable to defend this medal in the 1984 Olympics due to political stupidity and a false sense of pride from Soviet Union Olympic officials."
Gregor Popov frowns.
Gregor Popov says, "and now some of my favorite parts of the design..."
Gregor Popov features a quilted square with an image of a spry little girl - Olga Korbut:  winner of three gold medals at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany.
Gregor Popov exclaims, "Many think of her as Russian, but in fact she is Byelarusian!"
Gregor Popov says, "we are very proud of the contribution to gymastics and the inspiration she gave to the entire world over."
Wegarius Hodge smiles at Gregor Popov.
Britney Carson smiles.
Gregor Popov says, "This picture shows how the dynasty has survived - Vitaly Scherbo: winner of unprecedented 6 gold medals in gymnastics, including men's All-Around, for Unified Team in 1992 Olympics; won 3 bronze in '96 Games."
Gregor Popov recites:

    "In conclusion..."

Gregor Popov says, "I am very proud of my sports history and my contribution for my countries.   I hope that this quilt honors those who came before and after me to show you how proud Byelarusians are at their Olympic accomplishments."
Gregor Popov says, "thank you very  much."
Gregor Popov bows.

Kri Caselli shows a quilt of many colors, but focusing on crimsons and pinks.

Gregor Popov beams happily.
Kri Caselli says, "Not just romantic love, but love of friends and family, home and of life itself."
Britney Carson smiles.
Gregor Popov is hugging himself.
Kri Caselli says, "In the middle of my quilt you see a symbol I have created as being very personal to me.  It is a heart, which is of hot pinks and deep reds.  The special thing about this quilt is that it wears the stained glass wings of a butterfly."
Kri Caselli says, "It is a reminder that love is preious and fleeting."
Kri Caselli coughs.
Kri Caselli says, "precious..."
Kri Caselli smiles.
Gregor Popov blinks away tears.
Griffin Hamill nods.
Kri Caselli says, "Surrounding its edges are a verse that reads:Love is not finding someone to live with, It's finding someone you can't live without. It is surrounded by arrows of Cupid that are interwoven with red roses. Symbolizing the power and life that loves brings us."
Kri Caselli says, "In each corner you will see a representation of a globe showing love for the world, a group of figures representing friends on one corner and family on the other. And finally a lone figure representing the love we find within ourselves."
Britney Carson smiles.
Kri Caselli says, "This quilt was inspired by all of you and my family. Thank you for making me a part of Morada."
