Ama: a herdsman's daughter whose curiousity and kindness help save Lyra from the clutches of Mrs. Coulter

Lord Asriel: Lyra's father, whose daemon is a handsome snow leopard.  Lord Asriel is an explorer interested in the possibility of other universes and the investigation of Dust

Atal: female mulefa who befriends Mary Malone and helps her to make the Amber Spyglass.

The Authority: First of the Angels to condense out of Dust and the ruler of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Balthamos: one of Will's Angel guides.  Like all of his kind he is wise beyond human understanding although his nature is sarcastic.

Barnard-Stokes: Two renegade theologians who postulated the existence of numerous invisible, unreachable, yet material worlds.  Although they were silenced by the Church, some scholars believe there are sound mathematical arguments for their theory concerning other worlds.

Baruch: a low-ranking Angel and the younger of Will's Angel guides.  The love he shares with Balthamos allows them to communicate with each other across great distances.

Lyra Belacqua: A half-wild, half-civilized young girl who grows up among the scholars of Jordan College.  Lyra has an important fate that must be filled in another world without her knowledge of what she is doing.

Iorek Byrnison: exiled armored bear who befriends and helps Lyra.  With Lyra's help he tricks Iofur Raknison to become the new king at Svalbard.

Mrs. Cooper: an elderly woman whom Will entrusts to care for his mentally fragile mohter until he can return home again.

Farder Coram: one of the leaders of the western gyptians, Farder Coram becomes a special friend to Lyra and helps her learn to use the alethiometer.  His daemon is a beautiful autumn-colored cat.

Ma Costa: A charismatic woman and member of a leading gyptian family whose daemon is a hawk.

Billy Costa: Ma Costa's son, who is taken by the Gobblers.

Marisa Coulter: Lyra's mother and head of the Church's Oblation Board.  Her daemon is a golden monkey.
