| Parallel Bars: Name for both the apparatus on which a male gymnast performs a routine and the event itself. Example: Picture of parallel bars. Part: A single movement or skill. Pike: Legs held perfectly straight, body bent at hips, like the letter L. Pipe: Another name for the high bar. Pirouette: Turning around while in a handstand. Pit: An area usually filled with foam pieces which gymnasts use in practice for their landings so they won't get injured. Planche: The body is face down, horizontal, and supported entirely by the arms. Example: Chellsie Memmel performs a planche on balance beam. Podium: A raised platform on which the different apparatuses are placed during competitions. This allows the audience to see the gymnasts easier. Podium Training: A time, usually one or two days before the start of competition, in which gymnasts are allowed toi practice on the eqiupment they will compete on during the meet. Pommels: The handles on top of the pommel horse. Pommel Horse: An event and apparatus on which a male gymnast competes. Example: Picture of a pommel horse. Postflight: The part of the vault event after the gymnast pushes off the horse. Usually consistes of various saltos or twists. Preflight: The part of the vault event before the gymnast touches the horse. |
